Korean Economic Growth, 1876 - 2022: Openness, Institutional Change, and Learning (Studies in Economic History)

by Nak Nyeon Kim

This book provides the first comprehensive explanation of Korea’s 150 years of economic growth, from the opening of the ports to the present, based on consistently organized long-term statistics. The book also compares Korea’s experience with that of other countries. During this period, Korea experienced major systemic transitions, from a traditional society to colonial rule, and after liberation, the division between North and South Korea. East Asian latecomer nations, including Korea, rapidly closed the gap with advanced countries through learning and adaptation following their opening to the world. The book uses Korea’s case to demonstrate how institutional changes influence economic performance and explain the conditions under which rapid catch-up growth can occur or fail to occur. Korea’s high growth was achieved under an authoritarian regime with state-led industrial policies. As the limitations of this model became evident, Korea transitioned to a private-sector-led approach, facing economic crises in the process. Economic growth led to the rise of a highly educated middle class. This, in turn, surfaced demands that had been suppressed under the authoritarian regime, paving the way for democratization. Social development and fairness, long overshadowed by economic growth, became key policy agendas. Following the 1997 Asian financial crisis, Korea has faced the dual challenges of slow growth and rising inequality, driving increased calls for income redistribution and the establishment of a Korean-style welfare state. The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 explores long-term trends in Korea’s economic growth, comparing them with other countries. Part 2 provides a detailed, stage-by-stage analysis, highlighting the specific institutional and policy changes that shaped Korea’s development.

Geology, Geochemistry and Formation of Supergene Mineral Deposits in Deeply Weathered Terrain (Mineral Resource Reviews)

by Rob J. Bowell Charles R. M. Butt

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the major supergene mineral deposits formed in intensely weathered lateritic terrains. It discusses both contemporary and pre-existing supergene deposits, describing their geological, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics. Supergene processes of enrichment are those that occur under ambient near-surface conditions, compared to hypogene processes mostly at depth under higher temperatures and pressures. Supergene processes include the predominance of meteoric water circulation with concomitant oxidation and chemical weathering. Descending meteoric waters oxidize the primary (hypogene) minerals and redistribute the chemical elements. Residual supergene enrichment occurs as a physical process when the predominant rock-forming minerals oxidize and dissolve, concentrating ore elements hosted in resistant stable minerals; absolute chemical enrichment occurs when the ore elements themselves are leached and migrate in groundwater and precipitate due changes in the pH, oxidation potential and chemical composition of water. These processes can enrich commercially important elements to produce orebodies formed entirely by supergene processes. These include Al (bauxite), Fe ore, Ni-Co laterites, kaolinite, REE (clay deposits), Nb and REE (on carbonatites), base metals (secondary <span class="

It discusses, among others, the basics of poverty and inequality, issues of poverty and inequality among race/ethnic and sexual minority subpopulations, social processes, country and comparative perspectives, child poverty, and anti-poverty policies. It also touches on regional disparities. There has been rapid decline in poverty and inequality in China, East Asian and Pacific countries. Declines have also occurred in South Asia. But in Sub-Saharan Africa, poverty and inequality have risen in some countries, while in other regions, such as transition economies in Europe and Central Asia, only modest changes have occurred. This handbook provides a great reference for demographers, social scientists, policy makers and NGOs.

Redrawing Humanity’s Map: How Climate Change Is Shaping Migration

by Kira Virginia Vinke

Climate shocks are shaping human geographies, threatening coastlines, flooding settlements and heating up cities. Therefore, climate impacts and the associated environmental changes are increasingly reflected in social systems. Based on eight years of research, this book sheds light on the impact of climate extremes on migration and displacement. It provides insights into the different contexts in which people experience the effects of climate change and how they shape migration decisions. In the absence of a supranational governance framework, individuals and institutions are already searching for sustainable solutions across the migration cycle to uplift communities. This book builds on qualitative interviews and focus group discussions in numerous countries with people who had to leave their ancestral homelands due to climate impacts, with groups trying to support them, and also with those who want to prevent migration. These exchanges produced not only a body of scientific work, but also a complex overall picture and personal impressions of the state of our planet and the people who live on it. &“Kira Vinke's pioneering work on climate migration sheds light on the darkness in which millions of people are fighting for their own survival.&” Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Director General, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis &“Kira Vinke&’s work is an eye-opening testimony to the impacts of the climate crisis on migration and displacement. Her rigorously researched book combines narrations of displacement experiences around the world with hard facts. Despite all the challenges, it offers hope and highlights the urgency to act now.&” Andrew Harper, Special Advisor on Climate Action to the High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR

Public Opinion and Turmoil In Latin American Democracies (Latin American Societies)

by Helcimara Telles Joscimar Silva

This book analyzes the impacts of growing political turmoil and distrust in democracy on public opinion, political communication and electoral behavior of Latin American citizens over the first two decades of the 21st century. During this period, Latin American’s young democracies, which were in the process of consolidation, have faced a number of unresolved challenges, such as growing distrust in representative institutions and the judiciary, anti-system protests, the emergence of radical right groups and the election of outsiders and populist leaders. At the same time, Latin American citizens became more suspicious of corporate communication channels and started to trust more in information from social media, while scientific denialism and support to the Armed Forces and to religious groups have also grown. The rise of new right-wing and left-wing forces in Latin America, along with the proliferation of populist leaders from various ideological camps, have produced informational reconfigurations, with the strengthening of digital social media as an important source of political information and disinformation. All these processes have deeply affected public opinion and political behavior in the region, making election campaigns more polarized, radicalized and based on false messages, while the electorate also has gone through major changes, becoming more independent of parties, less young, more religious and with a greater presence of women. Public Opinion and Turmoil in Latin American Democracies analyzes how political turbulence, sociodemographic changes and frustration with the unfulfilled promises of the democratic regimes inaugurated in the last decades of the 20th century have produced important transformations on public opinion that deeply reshaped political behavior leading to an unprecedented crisis of democracy across the region.

Nationalism and Internationalism Intertwined: A European History of Concepts Beyond the Nation State (European Conceptual History)

by Pasi Ihalainen Antero Holmila

It is commonplace that the modern world is more international than at any point in human history. Yet the sheer profusion of terms for describing politics beyond the nation state—including “international,” “European,” “global,” “transnational” and “cosmopolitan,” among others – is but one indication of how conceptually complex this field actually is. Taking a wide view of internationalism(s) in Europe since the eighteenth century, Nationalism and Internationalism Intertwined explores discourses and practices to challenge nation-centered histories and trace the entanglements that arise from international cooperation. A multidisciplinary group of scholars in history, discourse studies and digital humanities asks how internationalism has been experienced, understood, constructed, debated and redefined across different European political cultures as well as related to the wider world.

Negotiating the Secular and the Religious in the German Empire: Transnational Approaches (New German Historical Perspectives)

by Rebekka Habermas

With its rapid industrialization, modernization, and gradual democratization, Imperial Germany has typically been understood in secular terms. However, religion and religious actors actually played crucial roles in the history of the Kaiserreich, a fact that becomes particularly evident when viewed through a transnational lens. In this volume, leading scholars of sociology, religious studies, and history study the interplay of secular and religious worldviews beyond the simple interrelation of practices and ideas. By exploring secular perspectives, belief systems, and rituals in a transnational context, they provide new ways of understanding how the borders between Imperial Germany’s secular and religious spheres were continually made and remade.
