Up North in Michigan: A Portrait of Place in Four Seasons

by Jerry Dennis

Northern Michigan is a place, like all places, in change. Over the past half century, its landscape has been bulldozed, subdivided, and built upon. Climate change warms the water of the Great Lakes at an alarming rate—Lake Superior is now the fastest-warming large body of freshwater on the planet—creating increasingly frequent and severe storm events, altering aquatic and shoreline ecosystems, and contributing to further invasions by non-native plants and animals. And yet the essence of this region, known to many as simply “Up North,” has proved remarkably perennial. Millions of acres of state and national forests and other public lands remain intact. Small towns peppered across the rural countryside have changed little over the decades, pushing back the machinery of progress with the help of dedicated land conservancies, conservation organizations, and other advocacy groups. Up North in Michigan, the new collection from celebrated nature writer Jerry Dennis, captures its author’s lifelong journey to better know this place he calls home by exploring it in every season, in every kind of weather, on foot, on bicycle, in canoes and cars. The essays in this book are more than an homage to a particular region, its people, and its natural wonders. They are a reflection on the Up North that can only be experienced through your feet and fingertips, through your ears, mouth, and nose—the Up North that makes its way into your bones as surely as sand makes its way into wood grain. The paperback contains a new chapter by Jerry Dennis that has been written since the publication of the hardcover.

Lafayette: Lessons in Leadership from the Idealist General

by Marc Leepson

Assessing the legendary Frenchman and his remarkable military career on both sides of the Atlantic The Marquis de Lafayette is an icon of both American and French history. In Marc Leepson&’s concise and engaging biography of this captivating figure, we learn how Lafayette, born into an aristocratic French family of warriors, traveled to the colonies at the age of nineteen to fight as a volunteer in the American Revolutionary War. Continental Army Major General Lafayette was soon embraced by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who became his lifelong friends. A fearless, accomplished battlefield commander, he also helped to convince the French court to provide crucial financial and military support to the Americans, which aided their defeat of the British. On his return to France, Lafayette played a leading role in the movement to make France a constitutional monarchy, served as commander of the National Guard during the French Revolution, and as a member of the Chamber of Deputies, opposed Napoleon&’s rule and was instrumental in ending the short-lived French July Revolution of 1830 that brought the &“citizen king,&” Louis-Philippe, to the throne. This focused biography of the legendary French statesman and military man offers a unique examination of his remarkable military career on both sides of the Atlantic.

Archival Communities: Constructing the Past in the Early United States

by Derek Kane O'Leary

The story behind the creation of the first archives in the new United States Archives, the foundational resource for historical research, do not emerge from a vacuum. The records, documents, and data that make up the historian&’s quarry are never neutral but are themselves the product of historical forces and individual choices. What materials are included in the archive, and why? Whose voices are preserved for posterity, and whose are silenced? In recent years, scholars have increasingly made archives themselves the subject of investigation. With Archival Communities, Derek Kane O&’Leary takes up this crucial task for the era of the early United States, arguing that key components of America&’s archives emerged from within an Atlantic world of circulating scholars, evidence, practices, and ideas. As he shows, US archives—and the historical narratives spawned by the documents preserved within them—drew their initial materials and meaning from this international context. And while demonstrating the disproportionate imprint of powerful men, O&’Leary&’s Atlantic frame reveals a far broader community of people who engaged in early archival efforts on the national, state, and local levels, including women who influenced the act of collection and public perceptions of the young nation&’s historical record.

The United States and the Origins of World War II in Europe

by Ross A. Kennedy

This volume spans 1914–1939 to provide a concise interpretation of the role the United States played in the origins of the Second World War. It synthesizes recent scholarship about interwar international politics while also presenting an original interpretation of the sources of American policy. The book shows how the drive for international reform, beginning with Woodrow Wilson, reflected both America’s unusual power and its fears about maintaining its domestic freedoms in a world dominated by arms races and the threat of war. The American desire to reform or to escape from the existing international system reshaped Europe’s balance of power from 1914 to 1929, leaving it precarious and unlikely to produce lasting stability. America’s power continued to loom globally in the 1930s, as first its isolationism and, after 1938, its open hostility toward Germany and Japan influenced the policies of the West and of Hitler. The coda at the end of the volume analyzes how the United States affected the strategic choices made by Great Britain, Nazi Germany, and Japan from 1939 to 1941 that globalized the conflict. This book will appeal to undergraduate and graduate students in history and political science, especially courses focused on World War II and the history of U.S. foreign relations.

Authenticity and Urbanism: A Critical Inquiry

by Ali Madanipour

This book investigates authenticity, an important but controversial cultural concept, and its relevance for urban socio-spatial processes. Defining authenticity as an evaluative relationship with an origin, it unpacks a range of origins from a critical, non-essentialist perspective: self, author, substance, event, time, place and society.Authenticity is a key concept in contemporary culture. It was selected as the word of the year 2023 by Merriam-Webster, it is significant for UNESCO in designating the world heritage, a philosophical battleground, and reflecting concerns about truth and trust in the digital age. This book offers a clear understanding of the concept and discusses its implications for urbanism, understood as both material and relational, both physical and social. It critically examines whether authentic urbanism may be possible through seeking a solid ground in the self, in the act of making, in the substance of objects, in transformative events, in particular times and places, and in society and culture.Analysing the complexities, nuances, and controversies of the concept of authenticity, and their implications for urban space and society, this book explores the promises and pitfalls of authenticity, looking for ways of avoiding its dangers and searching for its creative potential. Students and scholars in urban studies, geography, urban design, planning, and architecture, as well as in sociology and cultural studies, would find this interface between ideas and practices informative and insightful.

Anne Brontë: Her Life and Work (Routledge Revivals)

by Derek Stanford Ada Harrison

Although the Brontë story had been told many times, originally published in 1959, Ada Harrison and Derek Stanford wrote the first book to be devoted entirely to the life and work of Anne. The youngest of the three famous sisters, Anne was too often regarded as a mere appendage to the more spectacular Emily and Charlotte. Yet her work has stood the test of time no less than theirs. ‘If Anne Brontë had lived ten years longer,’ wrote George Moore, the first important critic to establish a claim for Anne as a writer of consequence, ‘she would have taken a place beside Jane Austen, perhaps even a higher place.’ It is in the light of such statements as this that the authors wrote their critical biography, showing the shy but engaging third sister as a writer and a character in her own right. The story of Anne’s life is told by Ada Harrison, who unfortunately did not live to see proofs of this book; the assessment of Anne’s verse and fiction is undertaken by the poet and critic, Derek Stanford. The issues they raise, and their general conclusions, may be regarded as controversial; but not only have they made a number of original points in this first book on Anne, they have also, by moving the spotlight, shed fresh illumination on the whole Brontë picture.

The Clue to the Brontës (Routledge Revivals)

by G. Elsie Harrison

Originally published in 1948, The Clue to the Brontës was written in part as response to a previous biography of Charlotte Brontë by Mrs Gaskell. The author argues that Gaskell's biography gets it all wrong. Harrison draws connections between Patrick Brontë and John Wesley. She finds Gaskell paid too much attention to gossip and did not verify her facts. The influence of John Wesley and the revival of evangelical religion is seen as a force in the Romantic Movement's impact on the English novel. The same influence is here seen to be at work in the writings of the Brontës, including those of their father Patrick.

The Dynamic Psychology of Early Buddhism (Psychology Revivals)

by Rune Johansson

Originally published in 1979, The Dynamic Psychology of Early Buddhism was a psychologist’s attempt to understand what the Buddha meant by “dependent origination” (paticcasumappāda, sometimes translated as “causality”). Those who are familiar with Theravada Buddhism have met the famous series of twelve links in the chain of causation (nidanas) of which each is said to be the condition of the next one, and the background of this book is exactly the challenging, teasing incomprehensibility of this series. The author collected all the passages in the Nikāyas or scriptural literature which throw light on the meaning of conditioned sequences, accepting only those explanations which agree with the facts in the Nikāyas. The result of these investigations is that the dynamic aspect of the Buddha’s psychology must have been much more extreme and all-pervading than was usually believed at the time of first publication. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Nursing Psychological Patients (Psychology Revivals)

by Mary Chadwick

Originally published in 1931, Nursing Psychological Patients was ‘a book written by a nurse for the purpose of increasing the interest of members of the nursing profession in psychological diseases, by pointing out that they require the nurses’ serious attention and offer an important field for professional skill. The opening chapters summarize former opinions and earlier methods of treating this group of human sufferings, and trace the subsequent growth of knowledge and the development of modern forms of treatment. Later chapters describe the more familiar neurotic troubles, their symptoms and the difficulties they present to the nurse, and attempt, by increasing her understanding, to render her more efficient in meeting wisely the problems which she encounters.’ Today it can be read in its historical context. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1931. The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

The Partition of India: Policies and Perspectives 1935–1947 (Routledge Revivals)

by C. H. Philips Mary Doreen Wainwright

The partition of India in 1947 was an outstanding event in world history. It formed a major turning point in the modern history of the sub-continent and of the Commonwealth. Originally published in 1970, after more than twenty years had passed, this title brought together the evidence and put into perspective the course of events which had led to the transfer of power in India from Britain to two successor states rather than to one.In 1937 the Muslims in India were thought to be politically weak and disorganized, yet ten years later they were able to put forward a convincing claim for a separate state. How did this come about? The lack of any sense of urgency in making a constitutional settlement between the wars, Congress miscalculations during the war, and the political exploitation of Muslim nationalism all played a part, but the interpretation of the events leading to partition tends to vary with the preconceptions and outlook of the various contributors to the debate at the time. The enquiry which led to this volume began as a simple attempt to collect evidence from those still alive. From this grew a regular series of meetings between ‘participants’ and historians of the three countries, culminating in a conference. The material presented here discusses the more important aspects of the partite from the different viewpoints. It is arranged in two sections: first-hand accounts by those who took part; and an analysis by leading specialists. In his Introduction Professor Philips points to the main historical problems which had emerged and suggests areas of study which would repay early investigation. The time was not yet ripe for a wholly definitive account, but this book suggests a framework within which this could be done and brought together raw material for future historians before the generation of eye-witnesses passed away. The resources of the School of Oriental and African Studies enabled an enterprise to be mounted which would have been beyond the capacity of any one individual. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1970. The language used and views portrayed are a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

The Football Managers (Routledge Revivals)

by Tony Pawson

There are few posts more dramatic, more controversial, or more public than a football Manager’s. The pressures of success, and failure; the problems of finance and business management; the challenge of tactics and training: these are just some of the issues which Tony Pawson examines in this book, originally published in 1973.He not only traces the development of the Manager from a minor figure to a dominating status – with portraits of those who had most strongly influenced the managerial revolution, from Chapman to Cullis and Busby – but also draws vividly the personalities and methods, the aims and achievements, of the leading Managers of the time, including giants like Stein and Shanky, Revie, Mercer, Nicholson and Clough. He discusses too the role of our National Team Managers, new developments in medical treatment, scouting and transfers, the strategies and techniques of the Managers not only of all the most powerful clubs in Great Britain but of those struggling for survival or recognition. In this entertaining book, Tony Pawson, who had written on the game for twenty years, and had himself played to First Division standard, presented an acutely observed, highly literate, and absorbing account of football management in all its aspects. With football managers still a topic of public interest today, this is a great opportunity to look back at the history of the role.

Palynofacies and Petroleum Migration Style of Inland Anambra Basin Nigeria: Unravelling Kerogen Maturation and Structural Traps Kinematics (SpringerBriefs in Earth Sciences)

by Kachikwulu Kingsley Okeke

This book highlights a detailed high-resolution palynofacies origin and depositional environment, source rock potential, hydrocarbon migration pathway and structural hydrocarbon entrapment mechanisms of the outcrop lithostratigraphic units of the inland Anambra basin. It broadens readers’ geoscientific conceptualization in the appraisal of the quantity and quality of outcrop scale, generated chemical macerated palynofacies elements and kerogen maturation synthesis, palynofacies hydrodynamics and sedimentary structures trapping orientation and configurations, structural mechanics and lateral facies changes. This boils down to perfect comprehension of the sedimentary, palaeontological data and natural plant evolution, growth and depositional processes in order to authenticate their origin and provenance, depositional environment and hydrocarbon production potential within the context of the basin. Presence of texturally mature coarse- to fine-grained sandstones, variable sedimentary structures, internal bed geometries and nature of bedding, age and palynofacies hydrodynamics are vital prognostic stratigraphic and paleoenvironment indices culminated in the kerogen types, organic thermal maturation, seals and reservoir rock quality along with kinematics-driven faults and joints in time and space. These geoscientific concepts were summarily authenticated in the specific objectives and chapter series of this book along with modelled prognosis for potential conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon prospects to contribute more information to oil exploration campaign in the inland basin.

Integrated Science to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals (Integrated Science #37)

by Beatriz Casais

The book &‘Integrated Science to achieve Sustainable Development Goals&’ debates how different fields of study can confront or mitigate problems or contribute together to the development of society. In brief, it is a book about the interdisciplinarity of knowledge surrounding the topics in society that are involved in the world development agenda. There is an increasing recognition of the importance of achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) set in the UN agenda 2030. The book seeks to address the need for the integration of multidisciplinary fields of knowledge to achieve the seventeen SDGs. The book was developed with contributions from established and well-known scholars in different fields. It is interdisciplinary in nature and international in scope, intending to bring out a collection of state-of-the-art/cutting-edge knowledge on policies to achieve the 17 SDGs as well as a range of actionable recommendations for future developments in the different fields with the purpose of addressing the Agenda 2030. The integration of different disciplines (including sociology, health, education, psychology, business, economics, political science, environmental studies and urban planning) in a complex problem like societal development gives this book the challenge to be an authoritative tool with guidelines for the entire community and for policymakers as well. Each chapter presents the state of the art of a topic considered important to achieve SDGs. The authors explain how their field contributes to the achievement of one or more SDGs, including the main theories and examples of empirical evidence that may guide society in using such knowledge to contribute to societal impact.

by Donald Pennington

As before, the second edition of this widely-used survey is in two main parts. The first analyses the major themes of seventeenth-century European history on a continent-wide basis. The second part moves on to outline political, diplomatic and military events in the various states and nations of the time. For the second edition all the chapters have been rewritten to take account of recent scholarship. Moreover, many new topics are discussed: the family; crime; the impact of printing; climate; population and social mobility; Islam in seventeenth-century Europe. Throughout, the book emphasises current lines of research and controversy to illustrate that the history of the period is a process of enquiry and argument rather than incontrovertible fact.
