Situated Listening: Attending to the Unheard (Sound Design)
by Morten Søndergaard Stephanie Loveless Tullis Rennie Freya ZinovieffGrounded in a conviction that how we listen matters deeply in the context of ongoing social, political, and ecological crises, Situated Listening: Attending to the Unheard sets forth a collection of methodologies and creative proposals for listening, advancing the framework of situated listening as both a theoretical concept and a methodological practice that investigates relationships between the listening body and the politics of place, space, and culture.Drawing from an array of scholarship that engages sound studies broadly, this 15-chapter book is written entirely collaboratively and from a multidisciplinary perspective. Each section includes scores for situated listening, which take the form of diagrams, instructions, exercises, images, and meditations. The scores offer alternate modes of sharing the central ideas of the associated chapters, inviting the reader to shift from theory into practice. This book contributes to decolonial, feminist, anti-racist, and anti-capitalist scholarship in the field of sound studies, by centering listening as a relational practice. This book brings together a roster of accomplished, international contributors, making it essential supplementary reading for advanced undergraduates and researchers in sound studies. It will be of interest to faculty and students in the fields of Sound Studies, Music, Feminist Science and Technology Studies, Urban Design, and Sound Art.
ECG Companion For Beginning Experts
by On ChenElectrocardiography (ECG) has existed in the medical field for over 100 years, but important concepts are still beyond the horizon for some trainees and physicians alike. This book occupies an unfilled niche, written for resident physicians across various specialties. Using a case-based format, it provides an analytical system that facilitates a high-yield interpretation, and by breaking down the 12-lead ECG using a simple system, the learner can quickly identify important findings. Thus, strengthening the knowledge of resident physicians, and facilitating better understanding and management of patients with abnormal ECGs—regardless of their career paths through the medical field.Key Features: Utilizes a two-pronged explanation style to facilitate learning where the first prong is the “what” of the ECG, and the second prong is the “why” and “how.” Focuses on high-yield abnormalities and clinical pearls, to enable those providers outside of the cardiology space to become more knowledgeable and confident when interpreting ECGs. Uses a built-in question bank to test and reinforce concepts learned in the primer and case studies.

Executive Dominance in Times of Crisis: Governing by Decree and the Pandemic (Routledge Research in Public Law)
by Camila Almeida PorfiroIn recent times, there has been a growing dominance of executives centered on the figure of a central leader, while parliaments, which should be the focus of political power, are being marginalized. This development reflects a historical process that has only worsened with the COVID-19 emergency. This book argues that the frequent use of unilateral acts by the executive, exacerbated in times of emergency, can lead to a process of serious democratic erosion. It holds that the unlimited expansion of unilateral action is incompatible with the principle of separation of powers and the basic elements of a constitutional democracy. The judicial and legislative branches, especially in times of crisis, must exercise firm control over executive acts. It puts forward the case that they should limit abuses and risks to democracy based on parameters that are attentive to democratic principles, institutional capacities, and the protection of fundamental rights. In this scenario, the book offers a contemporary analysis of executive dominance in Brazil, Italy, and Germany, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. It engages with traditional literature on the subject while providing a novel perspective, particularly in relation to the Global South. The book will be of interest to academics and researchers working in the areas of constitutional law and politics, administrative law, and international and comparative law.
Reading Geoffrey Chaucer: An Introduction (Reading Literature Today)
by Robert J. Meyer-LeeReading Geoffrey Chaucer: An Introduction offers students, general readers, and teachers an accessible series of essays on select works by Chaucer that emphasizes how those works’ deepest concerns and most fraught complexities remain urgently relevant in our present day. Each chapter connects Chaucer’s world with particular problems of our own, such as autocratic patriarchal social orders and geopolitical religious/racial conflict. Introducing modern critical approaches to those problems – gender studies and postcolonial theory, for example – each chapter provides in-depth discussion of how Chaucer explores their nature, implications, and consequences by way of his distinctive literary idiom. Texts covered include the General Prologue of the Canterbury Tales and the tales told by the Knight, Miller, Man of Law, Wife of Bath, Pardoner, and Prioress and the House of Fame, Legend of Good Women, and Troilus and Criseyde. Each chapter is self-contained, supplying essential backgrounds along with full summaries of the works under discussion. But the book is also criss-crossed with recurrent inquiries, which collectively trace some of the most characteristic qualities of Chaucer’s writing. With its unusual combination of breadth and depth, this introduction to Chaucer helps readers at all levels of familiarity appreciate why his work continues to matter.

The History and Philosophy of Boredom (Rewriting the History of Philosophy)
by Andreas Elpidorou Josefa Ros VelascoFrom Lucretius’s horror loci and Buddhist drowsiness to the religious boredom of acedia and the philosophical explorations of Kant, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, and Heidegger, boredom has long been a subject of philosophical fascination. Its story, unfolding through millennia, encompasses apathy, weariness, disaffection, melancholy, ennui, tedium, and monotony. Today, boredom assumes new forms: the drudgery of precarious work, the alienation of neoliberalism, the emptiness of leisure, and the overstimulation of our hyperconnected, technologically saturated lives. The History and Philosophy of Boredom is an outstanding collection, exploring boredom’s intellectual history from its early origins in classical thought to its contemporary manifestations. Containing eighteen specially commissioned chapters by an international team of contributors, the volume is organized into four thematic parts: Ancient Philosophical Perspectives Religious and Medieval Explorations Modern Philosophical Investigations Critical and Interdisciplinary Approaches Topics include boredom in Socratic dialogue, Daoist and Buddhist traditions, Stoicism, and Cynicism; the religious significance of boredom in Judaism and early Christianity; boredom’s role in the works of Kant, Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer, Mill, and Nietzsche; philosophical pessimism; phenomenological approaches; boredom as a political phenomenon; and boredom’s intersections with capitalism, socialism, racial identity, and transhumanism. The History and Philosophy of Boredom is indispensable for students and researchers in the history of philosophy, emotion studies, phenomenology, and moral psychology. It will also interest scholars in religion, classics, sociology, and the history of psychology.
Action without Hope: Victorian Literature after Climate Collapse
by Nathan K. HensleyA study of how writers from the early phases of our prolonged climate emergency used aesthetic strategies to redefine the category of action. What does it feel like to live helplessly in a world that is coming undone? Nathan Hensley turns to Victorian literature to uncover a prehistory of this deeply contemporary sense of powerlessness. For many in nineteenth-century Britain, their world seemed so scarred by human rapacity that restoring it seemed beyond the powers of any one individual. Like George Eliot’s characters in Middlemarch or the doomed lovers of Wuthering Heights, observers of the gathering carbon economy felt themselves ensnared by interlocked and broken systems. In the face of damage so vast and apparently irreversible, what could possibly be done? To answer this question, Hensley shows that nineteenth-century writers and artists devised new ways to understand action—and hope. They rescaled action away from the grandly heroic and toward minor adjustments and collaborative interventions. They turned away from logical proofs and direct argumentation and instead called on aesthetic technologies like sonnets and fractured lyrics, watercolor sketches, and vast, multiplot novels, finding scope for action not at the level of the theme or the thesis but in gestures and details. Ranging from J. M. W. Turner’s painterly technique to Emily Brontë’s dreamlike fragments (and reading along the way works by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, H. G. Wells, Lewis Carroll, Gerard Manley Hopkins, William Berryman, Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot, and Christina Rossetti), Hensley’s study makes an important contribution to Victorian studies and the environmental humanities.

The Scope of Architectural Theory (Design Science and Innovation)
by Jon LangThis book comprehensively lays out the knowledge base required for architectural practice and education at a time when artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are shaping the way architects think. Architects with a desire to retain their creative role in the design of buildings and urban spaces must understand and articulate the theoretical bases of their work and what it can achieve. This book provides a clear structure and outline of both the functional and procedural theoretical base for architects to employ in their work. It offers an intellectually rigorous basis that allows architects to understand the evolution of architecture through history as well as the advocacies of individual architects. It provides them with the scope of architectural theory necessary for designing for the future. The book can be a valuable reference for researchers and professionals interested in architectural theory and allied fields.
Analyzing Filipino Discourse: Meaning in Text (The M.A.K. Halliday Library Functional Linguistics Series)
by J. R. Martin Priscilla Angela CruzThis book explores Filipino, the national language of the Philippines, from the perspectives of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Positive Discourse Analysis (PDA)—informed by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). It is designed to encourage researchers to study Filipino texts—both spoken and written—and to unpack them in a way that clarifies their function in Philippine society. With this goal in mind, the book introduces a number of discourse analysis tools and shows how to apply them to a range of Filipino texts—including a children's picture book story, some mental health advice about coping with COVID-19, President Duterte's speech about the Philippine government's initial response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a comment piece from a student newspaper about problems with online learning modules produced by the Department of Education, and a reflective text about growing up in Davao. This is the first book to draw on a range of functional linguistic tools to analyse Filipino discourse in order to provide deeper insights into the role of language in bilingual education, the linguistic enactment of power, and the importance of thinking across languages when analysing texts. Key issues addressed include the complementarity of CDA and PDA, SFL's model of social context (as register and genre), analysing bilingual texts and bilingual education. The book fosters appliable linguistics as a dialectic of theory, description, and practice—supporting Filipino discourse analysts as they engage with the challenge of giving people access to a range of tools they can use productively to mean and thereby more successfully pursue their social goals. As such, it provides a model for researchers of other languages of how to encourage the analysis of meaning in texts within and beyond the clause. It is relevant to scholars across the spectrum of linguistics, particularly those working in Systemic Functional Linguistics.
