What It Takes to Heal: How Transforming Ourselves Can Change the World
by Prentis HemphillNATIONAL BESTSELLER • From one of the most prominent voices in the trauma conversation comes a groundbreaking new way to heal on a personal and a collective level.&“I love this book.&”—Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score &“In a time when so many of us are being trained in cynicism, this book stands in necessary defiance.&”—Cole Arthur Riley, author of Black Liturgies and This Here FleshAs we emerge from the past few years of collective upheaval, are we ready to face the complexities of our time with joy, authenticity, and connection? Now more than ever, we must learn to heal ourselves, connect with one another, and embody our values. In this revolutionary book, Prentis Hemphill shows us how. What It Takes to Heal asserts that the principles of embodiment—the recognition of our body&’s sensations and habits, and the beliefs that inform them—are critical to lasting healing and change. Hemphill, an expert embodiment practitioner, therapist, and activist who has partnered with Brené Brown, Tarana Burke, and Esther Perel, among others, shows us that we don't have to carry our emotional burdens alone. Hemphill demonstrates a future in which healing is done in community, weaving together stories from their own experience as a trauma survivor with clinical accounts and lessons learned from their time as a social movement architect. They ask, &“What would it do to movements, to our society and culture, to have the principles of healing at the very center? And what does it do to have healing at the center of every structure and everything we create?&”In this life-affirming framework for the way forward, Hemphill shows us how to heal our bodies, minds, and souls—to develop the interpersonal skills necessary to break down the doors of disconnection and take the necessary risks to reshape our world toward justice.

Things Become Other Things: A Walking Memoir
by Craig ModA transformative 300-mile walk along Japan&’s ancient pilgrimage routes and through depopulating villages inspires a heartrending remembrance of a long-lost friend, documented in poignant, imaginative prose and remarkable photography.&“An epic, exquisitely detailed journey, on foot, through a rural Japan few of us are likely to experience. Uniquely unforgettable.&”—William Gibson, New York Times bestselling author of NeuromancerPhotographer and essayist Craig Mod is a veteran of long solo walks. But in 2021, during the pandemic shutdown of Japan&’s borders, one particular walk around the Kumano Kodō routes—the ancient pilgrimage paths of Japan&’s southern Kii Peninsula—took on an unexpectedly personal new significance. Mod found himself reflecting on his own childhood in a post-industrial American town, his experiences as an adoptee, his unlikely relocation to Japan at nineteen, and his relationship with one lost friend, whose life was tragically cut short after their paths diverged. For Mod, the walk became a tool to bear witness to a quiet grace visible only when &“you&’re bored out of your skull and the miles left are long.&”Tracing a 300-mile-long journey, Things Become Other Things folds together history, literature, poetry, Shinto and Buddhist spirituality, and contemporary rural life in Japan via dozens of conversations with aging fishermen, multi-generational inn owners, farmers, and kissaten cafe &“mamas.&” Along the way, Mod communes with mountain fauna, marvels over evidence of bears and boars, and hopscotches around leeches. He encounters whispering priests and foul-mouthed little kids who ask him, &“Just what the heck are you, anyway?&” Through sharp prose and his curious archive of photographs, he records evidence of floods and tsunamis, the disappearance of village life on the peninsula, and the capricious fecundity of nature.Things Become Other Things blends memoir and travel writing at their best, transporting readers to an otherwise inaccessible Japan, one made visible only through Mod&’s unique bicultural lens.
Freedom Is a Feast
by Alejandro PuyanaA multigenerational, Latin American saga of love and revolution in which a rebel who commits a youthful betrayal receives a late-life chance at redemption and a new life: &“a tour de force&” from &“the new master&” (Luis Alberto Urrea, New York Times bestselling author of Good Night, Irene). In 1964, Stanislavo, a zealous young man devoted to his ideals, turns his back on his privilege to join the leftist movement in the jungles of Venezuela. There, as he trains, he meets Emiliana, a nurse and fellow revolutionary. Though their intense connection seems to be love at first sight, their romance is upended by a decision with consequences that will echo down through the generations. Almost forty years later, in a poor barrio of Caracas, María, a single mother, ekes out a precarious existence as a housekeeper, pouring her love into Eloy, her young son. Her devotion will not be enough, however, to keep them from disaster. On the eve of the attempted coup against President Chávez, Eloy is wounded by a stray bullet, fracturing her world. Amid the chaos at the hospital, María encounters Stanislavo, now a newspaper editor. Even as the country itself is convulsed by waves of unrest, this twist of fate forces a belated reckoning for Stanislavo, who may yet earn a chance to atone for old missteps before it&’s too late. With its epic scope, gripping narrative, and unflinching intimacy, Freedom Is a Feast announces a major new talent. Alejandro Puyana has delivered a wise and moving debut about sticking to one&’s beliefs at the expense of pain and chaos, about the way others can suffer for our misdeeds even when we have the best of intentions, and about the possibility for redemption when love persists across time. Winner of the Westport Prize for Literature

Why Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress—and How to Bring It Back
by Marc J. DunkelmanA provocative exploration about the architecture of power, the forces that stifle us from getting things done, and how we can restore confidence in democratically elected government—&“the best book to date on the biggest political issue that nobody is talking about&” (Matthew Yglesias) America was once a country that did big things—we built the world&’s greatest rail network, a vast electrical grid, interstate highways, abundant housing, the Social Security system, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and more. But today, even while facing a host of pressing challenges—a housing shortage, a climate crisis, a dilapidated infrastructure—we feel stuck, unable to move the needle. Why? America is today the victim of a vetocracy that allows nearly anyone to stifle progress. While conservatives deserve some blame, progressives have overlooked an unlikely culprit: their own fears of &“The Establishment.&” A half-century ago, progressivism&’s designs on getting stuff done were eclipsed by a desire to box in government. Reformers put speaking truth to power ahead of exercising that power for good. The ensuing gridlock has pummeled faith in public institutions of all sorts, stifled the movement&’s ability to deliver on its promises, and, most perversely, opened the door for MAGA-style populism. A century ago, Americans were similarly frustrated—and progressivism pointed the way out. The same can happen again. Marc J. Dunkelman vividly illustrates what progressives must do if they are going to break through today&’s paralysis and restore, once again, confidence in democratically elected government. To get there, reformers will need to acknowledge where they&’ve gone wrong. Progressivism&’s success moving forward hinges on the movement&’s willingness to rediscover its roots.

A New Way of Seeing: Distance and Traumatic Memory in the Poetry of World War II (American Wars and Popular Culture)
by Michael SarnowskiA New Way of Seeing considers the poetry of five writers—Louis Simpson, Keith Douglas, Richard Hugo, Howard Nemerov, and Randall Jarrell—whose work draws on their activities as soldiers in World War II. Basing his examination on extensive primary-source research, Michael Sarnowski identifies distance, both literal and figurative, and traumatic memory as two interconnected elements of how these poets internalized the war and made sense of the events they witnessed. The book is structured on a gradient related to each poet’s proximity to combat, as the chapters in turn focus on an infantryman (Simpson), a tank commander (Douglas), a bombardier (Hugo), a pilot (Nemerov), and a stateside flight instructor (Jarrell). Sarnowski relies on a wealth of archival material overlooked by previous scholarship, including poem drafts, correspondence, flight logs, and personal belongings. The conclusion revisits notions of legacy and representation by assessing factors that contributed to the early labeling of World War II soldiers as a “Silent Generation,” in contrast to the outpouring of poetry published during and following the First World War. By exploring how poets processed their wartime experiences, A New Way of Seeing offers a stark reminder of why it remains vital to recognize the physical, mental, and psychological consequences endured by veterans.

Major Blunders of The Second World War: New Insights into Mistakes and their Consequences
by Andrew SangsterBlunders and their Consequences: Examining Errors of the Second World WarWar is rife with mistakes, but the consequences can be catastrophic when those errors escalate to blunders caused by carelessness or ignorance. In the Second World War context, these blunders often led to devastating loss of life, strategic failures, and enduring controversies. This book delves into such incidents, from obscure mishaps to high-profile missteps. Among the tales are the shocking story of an American destroyer accidentally firing a live torpedo at a battleship carrying President Roosevelt, and a German aircraft crash-landing in neutral territory with critical invasion plans onboard. Overconfidence played a key role in many tragedies, such as a Luftwaffe raid that struck American gas shells, causing widespread casualties, and the Dieppe raid, which became a planning disaster. Some incidents remain fiercely debated. The British sinking of the French fleet continues to raise questions about necessity versus error, while King Edward VIII&’s alleged treachery may stem more from naivety than intent. The conviction of Admiral Karl Dönitz at Nuremberg also sparks controversy, as his U-boat tactics mirrored Allied strategies. Through vivid storytelling and detailed analysis, this book exposes the human error behind critical wartime decisions, from tactical misjudgments to intelligence failures. It examines the hidden and often overlooked blunders that shaped the course of WWII, offering a fresh perspective on the complexities of war and the fragile nature of leadership under pressure.

Analytical Dynamics of Nonlinear Rotors (Nonlinear Physical Science)
by Albert C. Luo Yeyin Xu Jianzhe HuangThis book is a monograph about the analytical dynamics of nonlinear rotor systems. The analytical solutions of periodic motions in nonlinear rotor systems are presented in this book. To help one understand the analytical solutions, the generalized harmonic balance method for periodic motions in polynomial nonlinear systems is briefly reviewed first, and then the semi-analytical method for periodic motions in any nonlinear systems is presented briefly too, which is also called the implicit mapping method. Such two analytical methods are employed to determine the solutions of periodic motions in nonlinear rotor systems. The analytical expressions of periodic motions to chaos for nonlinear rotor systems are presented, and the frequency-amplitude characteristics of nonlinear rotor systems are discussed. In addition, the accurate modeling of nonlinear rotors with oil films is presented, and the periodic motions of such fully nonlinear oil-film rotor systems are developed through the semi-analytical method. This book provides a better understanding of frequency-amplitude characteristics in nonlinear rotor systems. The methodology presented in this book can help one study complicated nonlinear rotor systems.
Working with the Elephant: Methods for Engaging with the Unsaid in Groups and Organizations
by Lotte SvalgaardWe’ve all been there. We are in a working group or at a meeting, discussing a topic or a challenge, and all the while, as a separate track running underneath our conversation, there is a subtext that no one explicitly addresses. This is an example of ‘the elephant in the room’. Most of us notice the elephant, it gets in the way, and it’s difficult to deal with until someone points at it and says, ‘There it is, let’s take a look at it and reduce its impact.’ With an engaging use of examples and questions, Lotte Svalgaard addresses how we can best deal with the elephant and thus promote job satisfaction, creativity and productivity. In the context of action, what we notice often recedes into the background and gradually slips out of focus until we eventually reconnect with our need to reflect and recreate a space for it. This book addresses the challenge of focusing on, holding onto and acting on what we notice ‘in the middle of it all’. Maintaining a simultaneous focus on task and process – what we do and what we notice – is what the author defines as ‘double awareness’. Double awareness is not only a core capacity but also a core challenge. While the aim of The Elephant in the Room was to promote understanding and awareness of this core challenge and to inspire both reflection and action for anyone wishing to improve engagement in their workplaces, Working with the Elephant is taking this challenge a step further by providing ten core challenges in dealing with elephants in groups and organizations. It is a workbook about the difficult transition from avoidance to action. With help, support and tips, it guides readers to take action where it will make a difference for them, their group and the organization as a whole. It can be used as a workbook for The Elephant in the Room or it can be used independently.
