Secondary English for Generation Alpha: Humane Pedagogy for Local, National and International Contexts (National Association for the Teaching of English (NATE))
by Lorna SmithSecondary English for Generation Alpha seeks to promote a humane, responsive and creative pedagogy for English that will develop and enrich understanding and enjoyment of language in all its forms (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and help students develop into successful members of their home and wider communities.Generation Alpha (children born between 2010 and 2025) are growing up amid unprecedented challenges – local, national and global – that threaten social justice. The authors of this book see subject English as one means of supporting Generation Alpha to meet these challenges and provide them with the necessary skills and knowledge to fit them for a changing world. Responding to tendencies to standardise and centralise curriculum, pedagogy and teacher education, the book explores the ways in which subject English can draw on local contexts and expertise in schools, universities and communities to address local needs and interests, demonstrating how what we learn locally can be relevant beyond. The chapters in this volume represent work being done, individually and collectively, in settings across England, by teacher educators in universities and other centres, alongside their partnership schools. By describing their own practice in English classrooms, the authors hope to empower others – in England, but also beyond – simultaneously producing both a broad and an in-depth exploration of the subject. Secondary English for Generation Alpha emerges from the world of initial teacher education, yet takes ideas from current research and makes them relevant to teachers and those interested in English teaching in schools in any context.

Judicial Review in Greater China: Activism and Deference of Four Apex Courts (Globalization: Law and Policy)
by Shiling XiaoThis book examines the judicial review systems in the four areas of Greater China – China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau – and uncovers judicial review activities of the apex courts of each region. It provides a comparative assessment of judicial activism and deference. The development of modern judicial review is one of the key elements of the twentieth century’s legal heritage. By enforcing the principles of constitutionalism, the rule of law, and human rights protection, many courts have been vested with unprecedented powers and have played an essential role in supervising the exercise of government power through constitutional and administrative review. This work investigates the most up-to-date aspects of judicial review in Greater China and reflects on the modern theory regarding the judicialization of politics in different political regimes: democratic, authoritarian, and hybrid. The volume collects all substantive judicial review decisions delivered in the past twenty years by the four apex courts: the China’s Supreme People’s Court, the Taiwan Constitutional Court, the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong, and the Court of Final Appeal of Macau. This comprehensive dataset includes some 800 judicial review decisions, presenting a comprehensive resource of fundamental baseline data for evaluating judicial review in Greater China. The book will be an invaluable companion for scholars and researchers working in the areas of Comparative Public Law, Comparative Constitutional Law, Constitutional Politics, and Asian Studies.
International Political Economy and the Global South: Perspectives from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East
by Bashir Saade Giuliano Martiniello Zaynab El Bernoussi Adriana María Garriga-LópezInternational Political Economy and the Global South provides students from both the Global South and the Global North a textbook that speaks to distinct concepts, categories and issues of International Political Economy (IPE) from a Southern and Northern perspective, while identifying how they differ. The primary goal is to provide an alternative or complementary reading of IPE derived from the experiences of the periphery. The textbook asks: how has the Global South responded to the demands of a global economy? What is the meaning of sovereignty to those who have experienced colonialism and imperialism? How can the Global South claim the “international” when the Global North sets its norms, institutions and practices? It opens with a standard introduction, offering an intellectual history of key IPE concepts, including state, firm, capital, power, labor, globalization and finance. Each subsequent chapter follows a similar structure: exploration of the problem; discussion of what may be missing from dominant understandings of the problem and/or how orthodox IPE may tell us something different about the problem compared to what is experienced in the Global South; and identification of alternative frameworks and perspectives.Aiming to de-Westernize and decentralize the production of knowledge, the textbook introduces students to the discipline and phenomenon of IPE with a genuinely global perspective.

Latin American Art at The Museum of Modern Art: The Power of the Canon (Routledge Research in Museum Studies)
by Miriam M. Basilio GaztambideThis book sheds light on an as-yet unstudied aspect of The Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) preeminent role in establishing the definition of the problematic term “Latin American art” in the United States from the 1930s to the present through its collection displays. In examining the shifting categorization of Latin American works according to stylistic and geographic taxonomies, we gain a greater understanding of the organization of the Museum’s collections as a whole during the 1940s and 1950s. This book is the first to document these institutional precedents, crucial for the understanding of the articulation of a Modernist canon and its contested legacy today. The MoMA is widely recognized as the preeminent institution that defined 20th-century art through its collection – shaping our understandings of the history of art, with its hierarchies and exclusions, as they sediment over time. MoMA’s holdings of art from Latin America shed light on a key period when the stylistic categories that have since come to be accepted by many today as the Modernist canon developed. MoMA’s collection displays suggest ways in which artists from areas of the world formerly excluded can be incorporated within today’s increasingly global museums. MoMA’s approach may be compared to initiatives adopted by several museums since the 2000s, creating geographically defined curatorial positions as a way to redress gaps in collecting art from Latin America and other areas of the world. In this book, author Miriam M. Basilio Gaztambide offers a closer study of the history of collection displays as a means to understand canon formation in modern art museums. This work will be of interest to those researching Latin American, American, modern, and contemporary art, and curatorial and museum studies.
Criminal Love: Theory and Praxis of Queerness in India
by R. Raj RaoThis book takes up the challenge of studying the wide gamut of lived reality of the Indian queer, against the backdrop of a set of theories. Written by a man who has been openly gay for the last 40 years, it dissects issues, concepts, and theories within the realm of queer studies against the day-to-day experiences of Indian queers. Drawing from personal and shared experiences, it highlights the sites of transgression within a seemingly monosexual society and analyses the aspects of the struggle of being queer in a repressive environment. This book comprises of three fundamental aspects of queerness relevant to us in India today—theory, culture, and politics, which has been primarily analysed through literature and film. The literature here includes references to the author’s own work as a practicing writer, as well as to that of other contemporary writers. It is an attempt to delink alternative sexuality from gender and establish it as an autonomous category. This book would be useful to the students, researchers and teachers of women and gender studies, sociology, history, economics, political science, and other interdisciplinary courses in social sciences. It will also be valuable reading for those interested in South Asian studies, especially post-colonial contemporary Indian society.

The Holocaust and Latin America: Migration, Resettlement and Memory (The Holocaust and its Contexts)
by Daniela Gleizer Emmanuel Kahan Yael SimanThis book explores the history of the Holocaust in relation to Latin America. It is estimated that about 100,000 Jewish refugees immigrated to the region between 1933 and 1945. Despite the critical role Latin America played in sheltering Jewish refugees from Nazism, the region has remained largely on the margins of Holocaust studies. The volume adopts a global perspective, examining the Holocaust’s connections to Latin America, both as a region and as a mosaic of distinct national contexts. Structured around three key themes —migration, settlement, and memory— the book not only addresses the immigration policies of Latin American governments but also amplifies the experiences and voices of Jewish survivors who found refuge in this culturally diverse region.
Geopolitics and strategy: China, the Quad and the Southeast Asian Pivot (Palgrave Studies in Maritime Politics and Security)
by Leszek BuszynskiChina seeks geopolitical space in the Western Pacific . The spearhead of China's expansion is the navy which is now the world's largest with an expanding carrier force to enforce its maritime claims in the South China Sea and elsewhere. The geopolitical pivot for China is Southeast Asia. In view of China's constricted maritime geography, Southeast Asia is the one place that can provide access for its expanding navy allowing China to expand in different directions. Control of this region would deprive the US of a positional advantage in the Western Pacific, It would divide the Indo Pacific into two sections, the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific., separating Japan from India and nullifying the Quad grouping which brought together the US, Japan, Australia and India to counter Chinese expansionism. Because of its strategic value, Southeast Asia has become a key region in the rivalry between China and the US with its partners in the Quad. However, Southeast Asia is a region of great diversity and some countries would side with China while others would resist it. Whether China can achieve control of this region is of great concern to the US and the Quad as it relates to Chinese long term ambitions and its challenge not just to the region but to the global order.
Prevention of Air Pollution: Selected Paper in 2024 9th International Conference on Advances in Energy and Environment Research (Environmental Science and Engineering)
by Qiang Wang Ahmad Hosseini-BandegharaeiThis book offers readers with analysis of the main causes and purification technology of air pollution.Air, as the primary element on which human life depends, directly impacts human living and health. However, a 2022 report from the World Health Organization indicated that "the air nearly the entire global population (99%) breathes exceeds WHO air quality limits, threatening their health". Currently, the main approaches to air pollution involve source control and the treatment of air pollutants.Analyzing the causes of air pollution is an effective method for controlling pollution from its source and preventing its spread. It is also an efficient and rapid way to identify harmful gas components and then apply targeted treatment.Currently, big data model analysis and sensor perception technology are widely used analytical techniques. Combined with chemical transport models, they can simulate and predict pollutants, achieving better causal analysis and forecasting.Additionally, air pollution purification is an important component of prevention of air pollution.Currently, the most important research direction is how to purify air pollution without causing secondary environmental contamination, in addition to physical and chemical means. This book provides engineers and researchers in the field of air pollution prevention with research findings related to this area. It aims to share specific and valuable knowledge and content to improve prevention of air pollution efforts.
Green FinTech: Impact Taxonomy for Swiss Fintech (Sustainable Finance)
by Karen Wendt Mathias HauserThis publication is the first one to develop a global impact taxonomy for FinTechs that aspire to fulfill the SDGs. The transformative arena of impact investing is witnessing significant shifts, through innovation and technology advances and through the emergence ad application of a new global societal contract. Finance and FinTech companies experience an increasing exposure to the evolving landscape of impact investing, the authors have identified an exigent need to construct a standardized Impact Taxonomy for FinTechs. This taxonomy is envisaged to create a uniform system, thereby enabling FinTechs to quantify their impact in a standardized manner. The inherent heterogeneity in the FinTechs industry and the still emergent implementation knowledge on "how to " implement the SDGs, necessitates the development of this taxonomy, which aims to enhance clarity, transparency, and comparability in measuring impacts, thus facilitating informed decision-making for investors, regulators, and the fintech entities themselves. This publication is conceived as an academic response to the specified need, coming up with the first framework of an impact taxonomy. This book explores the impact innovation potential of emerging technologies and machine learning in the FinTech industry from an entrepreneurial perspective. It maps the current initiatives, is substantiating a detailed examination and proposing a framework for a first global Impact Taxonomy tailored to the fintech sector. In the entrepreneurial sphere and analyses and develops strategies for identifying impact on governance and decision making and for managing risk.It provides practical advice on evaluating, strategizing and improving sustainability in the digital asset sector. This book offers a useful guide for finance professionals, entrepreneurs and early-stage investors.

Western Balkans and the Future of Europe: Between an Enlargement and a Commitment Fatigue (The Future of Europe)
by Aleksandar Stojkov Thierry WarinOne of the main questions addressed in this book is whether the EU enlargement fatigue has resulted in broken promises leading to a “commitment fatigue” among the EU candidate states from Western Balkans. Until recently, political and business leaders from Western Balkans, almost without exception, have repeatedly highlighted their aspirations for joining the Union. The discussions about future of Europe would be incomplete, without investigating the relations between EU and Western Balkans. This book addresses academic researchers, policy makers, and higher education students.
