American Denim: The Supposed Final Days and Resurgence of a Manufacturing Icon
by Matt SharkeyAmerican Denim aims to preserve a unique property and a unique time in the history of American textiles. At one time the world&’s largest denim mill, occupying more than a million square feet, you almost couldn&’t see where the looms ended at the White Oak mill in Greensboro, North Carolina. Between 1915 and 1970, the lion&’s share of denim produced for Levi Strauss & Co. was made there. Photographer Matt Sharkey was the only person granted access to all three recent stages of the White Oak mill&’s life: • the last week of commercial production in December 2017 • empty and vacated in February 2018 • brought back to life in a small but mighty way in September 2022 Here is a layered history told through beautifully honest "portraits" that were captured with film, an analog process to honor analog manufacturing and those who worked, and work, at the mill.

Subsistence Whaling: Past History and Contemporary Issues
by Gregory G. Monks Nobuhiro Kishigami James M. SavelleThis book examines the past history, and contemporary status of subsistence whaling. The papers derive from a symposium ‘Aboriginal Whaling and Identity in the 21st Century’ held at the Eleventh Conference on Hunting and Gathering Societies in Vienna, Austria in September 2015. Whales, especially large baleen whales, are the largest animals targeted by many societies, prehistoric or modern, and major facets of subsistence, social structure and ideology are still deeply embedded in past and current whaling lifeways. Yet there is probably no other environmental/political issue that has attracted as much attention in the late 20th and early 21st century as whaling practices and policies. Accordingly, the papers address two major themes: 1) the extent and characteristics of major prehistoric and early historic whaling activities, and 2) case studies amongst modern whaling societies, and how these societies are impacted by current political and economic realities and by the anti-whaling movement.
The Geometry of Accounting: From Debits and Credits to Cartesian Coordinates (Springer Texts in Business and Economics)
by Byung T. RoThis book demonstrates how geometry along with linear algebra can be used to learn and study accounting. It explains how to present (record) economic transactions (accounting transactions or events) and explores the features and principles of double entry accounting based on geometric concepts and theories in multidimensional Cartesian geometric and vector spaces. The geometric approach in this book is concerned with the production of accounting numbers and the entry rather than exit side of accounting. It is markedly different from the traditional approach to learning, studying, and teaching accounting. This book is intended for graduate accounting students, accounting educators, and accounting scholars alike, who are interested in accounting beyond the basics and have some knowledge of geometry and linear algebra.

Decarbonizing German Family Firms (Familienunternehmen und KMU)
by Gunther FriedlIn this Open Access Publication, we present four chapters that provide a holistic view of the critical steps in a family firm&’s decarbonization journey. Achieving the EU's climate targets relies heavily on German family firms, given their pivotal role in the economy and substantial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. First, we explore the measurement and accounting mechanisms of GHG emissions, leveraging data from German family firms across various industries. Second, we examine the management of goal tensions between environmental and economic objectives, focusing on how family firms can derive value from their emissions data. Third, with the upcoming Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the importance of communicating decarbonization efforts to stakeholders, we analyze the implications of this reporting mandate for family firms. Fourth, given the high investment demands of decarbonization measures, profitability remains a critical concern. Therefore, we also delve into the relationship between corporate environmental performance and corporate financial performance, highlighting the intersection of sustainability and long-term financial viability.
Artificial Intelligence: Ethics and the New World Order
by Jason C. RobinsonThis thought-provoking book explores the most promising and threatening technology imaginable—artificial intelligence (AI) or thinking-machines. Following the shocking release of generative AI (ChatGPT) in 2022, questions about the future of humanity and our role as apex minds have exploded with great urgency. The book contributes uniquely to AI conversations in three main ways. First, it broaches questions often ignored by AI developers and tech-enthusiasts, including corporate responsibility and the role technology plays in the widespread manipulation of cultures for profit and power. Second, it asks big and unanswered questions about the nature of thinking, consciousness, morality, purpose, and the good life, as a means of laying the foundation needed to create a better AI. Third, by framing AI evolution in three unique stages of development—Oz, Feallan, and Adouren—it takes readers far beyond the present horizon of large language models. While being accessible to a wide audience, this book offers a thought-provoking examination of the most pressing questions and risks of AI.
Belle Starr: The Truth Behind the Wild West Legend
by Michael WallisIn this definitive biography of the most infamous female outlaw of the nineteenth century, best-selling historian Michael Wallis challenges a notorious legacy. In the annals of legendary Wild West desperadoes, Belle Starr is remembered to this day as the Bandit Queen. Shortly after her murder in 1889, a highly romanticized, sensational book titled Bella Starr ... The Bandit Queen, or the Female Jesse James was published—the first in a series of high-profile portraits to brand Starr as a villain. Now, celebrated author Michael Wallis parses over a century of mythmaking to reveal the woman behind the renegade legend. Wielding compelling research, including correspondence, official records, and contemporary newspaper accounts, Wallis traces Starr’s beginnings to Carthage, Missouri, where she was born Myra Maibelle Shirley in 1848 and was classically educated to be a Southern belle. Myra’s early years were characterized by the chaotic violence of the Civil War—she was traumatized by the death of her brother, who was killed riding with “bushwhackers,” one of the many insurgent guerilla groups supporting the Confederate Army. From then on, she swore revenge against all Yankees and became a willing “friend to any brave and gallant outlaw.” The crimes committed by Starr’s innermost circle—stagecoach stickups, bank robbery, horse theft—would take her from war-torn Carthage to rollicking Scyene, Texas, until she finally settled in Indian Territory (present Oklahoma). And although Starr indeed ran in the same circles as notorious outlaws Jesse James and the Younger brothers, the crimes ascribed to her were greatly embellished—including the fact that the allegedly bloodthirsty Starr more than likely never killed a single person. Turning a redemptive eye to Belle Starr’s tarnished legacy, Wallis crafts an illuminating portrait of a woman demonized for refusing to accept the genteel Victorian ideals expected of her, a woman who chose instead to live her life outside the law, riding sidesaddle with a pearl-handled Colt .45 strapped to her hip.

Masculinities in Schools
by Lewis WedlockTeachers are struggling with issues and conversations around masculinities in schools. How do we discuss problem areas associated with masculinities, without demonising the young men we are engaging with? How do we create safe spaces for young people to discuss and challenge their masculinities together? It has never been harder to engage young men in conversations about masculinity, and it has never been more confusing to know where to start. Educator and social scientist Lewis Wedlock enables schools and teachers to grow their confidence in exploring masculinities with young people. He challenges limiting ideas of masculinity and takes a compassionate, restorative approach. Through this book, Lewis supports teachers to deepen their understanding of how masculinities are shaped, to explore the many complexities and to get comfortable with the uncertainties. He offers practical guidance for the classroom and for transformative, community centred interventions. He empowers teachers to feel confident in implementing sustainable, flexible, and constantly mendable models of masculinity. The subject of masculinities is often approached through a lens of ‘toxicity’, prompting disengagement and disconnection. This book takes a different approach. It is not about polarizing, demonizing, or standardizing masculinities. It supports and advocates for schools to be open to the wide diversity of masculinities and to develop cultures of accountability, integrity, authenticity, and pride.
