Agency Implementation of Alternative Contracting Methods

by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Transportation Research Board National Cooperative Highway Research Program Mounir El Asmar

The use of alternative contracting methods (ACMs) has accelerated the delivery of highway design and construction projects. Led by documented successes on large, high-profile projects such as I-15 in Utah, the Intercounty Connector in Maryland, and the Sellwood Bridge in Oregon, ACMs have resulted in shorter project delivery times with less disruption to the traveling public. The use of ACMs is becoming commonplace in projects by state departments of transportation, but not just for large projects. The information in this document builds on the three-volume NCHRP Research Report 939: Guidebooks for Post-Award Contract Administration for Highway Projects Delivered Using Alternative Contracting Methods. NCHRP Web-Only Document 421: Agency Implementation of Alternative Contracting Methods, from TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program, aims to ensure agencies have the practical methods and tools to improve their ACM contract administration.

by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Transportation Research Board National Cooperative Highway Research Program Don McLean Katie McLaughlin Tom Timcho Paul Lutkevich Travis Longcore Mansoureh Sadat Jalali Steven Stapleton Andrew Kassing Yingfeng “Eric” Li Rajaram Bhagavathula Ronald Gibbons

Roadway lighting must balance user needs and safety with the impact of the lighting system on the environment. For example, the impact of lighting on flora and fauna might be considered more important for a roadway along a wildlife reserve or in a coastal region, whereas user safety might be more critical on interstates and major arterials. NCHRP Web-Only Document 420: Gaps and Emerging Technologies in the Application of Solid-State Roadway Lighting, from TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program, narrows the knowledge gaps related to the further application of Solid-State Roadway Lighting.

Tweetable Nietzsche: His Essential Ideas Revealed and Explained

by C. Ivan Spencer

Friedrich Nietzsche radically confronted Western culture, morality, and social mores, until his death in 1900. Occupying a first-rank position as a thinker, his thought later inspired numerous movements that weave the tapestries of contemporary culture: existentialism, theology, nihilistic culture, Nazism, twentieth century film and art, atheism, ethical egoism, deconstruction, the hermeneutics of suspicion, and the postmodern age. Nietzsche’s incalculable sway on our culture persists to this day. Even his acerbic criticism of Christianity has affected the religion. But many people remain unaware of the pervasive attitudes Nietzsche disseminated, attitudes they echo. His stark prophecy that “God is dead, and we killed him” thrives in this accelerating secular age where postmodernists lionized him as a prophetic voice of a new era. Tweetable Nietzsche introduces and analyzes the worldview of Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche’s tweets, 140 characters or less, provide readers a distilled essence of every major aspect of his worldview. Each tweet illustrates some aspect of his worldview contributing toward a full-orbed understanding of Nietzsche’s thought.

Ten Women of the Bible: One by One They Changed the World

by Max Lucado Jenna Lucado Bishop

We don't even know all their names. Some are referred to only by their nationality. Some are known only by the place where they lived. Some would become queens, while others would live on the fringes of society. One would give birth to a nation, and one would give birth to the Messiah. Their culture often overlooked or discounted the contributions of women, yet the writers of Scripture found these women and the role they played remarkable to the telling of God's story. As we study the lives of the women in the Bible, we find important truths that God wants us to grasp. They lived in a different world than our own, but we find ourselves facing the same issues they faced. Yet even more, these women show us there is a God who sees us where we are and loves us for who we are. He is the one who hovers over all the pages of the Bible, shaping lives, rescuing hearts, healing sicknesses, raising what was dead to life, and assigning high callings to those who choose to follow him and have faith in him. In this 10-session workbook, Max Lucado tells some of his favorite accounts of these ten women--Sarah, Abigail, Esther, the Samaritan Woman, Mary Magdalene, and others--and describes what set them all apart. EACH SESSION INCLUDES 50 in-depth Bible studies to help you navigate the stories in Scripture Daily points to remember to help you summarize the key points Daily prayers to help you focus your thoughts and move into your quiet time Weekly memory verses to help you hide God's word in your heart Additional notes to help you lead a group through the study Ten Women of the Bible is ideal for both individual use and for study in a small-group setting.
