African Venice: A Guide to Art, Culture and People
by Shaul Bassi Paul KaplanAfrican Venice is the first guidebook to the extensive historical and contemporary African presence in the city of the lagoons. Father Chaucer and the Apologists: Cecily Chaumpaigne and 700 Years of Rape Culture
by Sarah BaechleOn May 4, 1380, Cecily Chaumpaigne filed a quitclaim with the Chancery in Westminster, releasing the poet Geoffrey Chaucer from any prosecution de raptu meo (on account of my rape). This legal document, lost for centuries, has haunted Chaucer studies since its rediscovery in 1873. Over the past 150 years since it reemerged, many Chaucer scholars have sought to discount, sanitize, or excuse the release. Through a careful examination of the long Chaucer historiography, Sarah Baechle shows how critics have read the question of Chaucer’s potential culpability for rape through prevailing attitudes toward sexual violence. They did so, moreover, in ways that will be very familiar to contemporary readers versed in rape culture—practices that dismiss sexual violence by centering and promoting accused perpetrators, erasing or attacking the victim-survivor, and minimizing the violence of the crime. Baechle pairs the necessary excavation of this critical history with reparative readings of the poet’s narratives of sexual violence, including the Miller’s Tale, the Reeve’s Tale, the Wife of Bath’s Tale, and Troilus and Criseyde, and she theorizes “assailant speech” as a counterpart to survivor speech, proposing it as a new means of understanding Chaucer’s place in feminist studies of the Middle Ages.Father Chaucer and the Apologists is an urgently needed examination of the discourse surrounding Chaumpaigne’s quitclaim that reveals the ties between Chaucer studies and the persistence of rape culture. This book will appeal to students and scholars of Chaucer and of gender and sexual violence more broadly.

Culturally Responsive Teaching in a High School Percussion Ensemble: Validating Immigrant Identities (Routledge Focus on Music Education: Culturally Responsive Teaching)
by Christiana Athena-BlackwellCulturally Responsive Teaching in a High School Percussion Ensemble: Validating Immigrant Identities addresses themes of immigration, identity, and culturally responsive teaching in music education using a deep case study of Brazilian samba music in the context of a high school percussion ensemble.Through an in-depth ethnographic study of the World Percussion Ensemble at Somerville High School, Massachusetts, and how it was renovated by a progressive music program director, the author demonstrates how a program can respond to the cultures and needs of immigrant students by creating a unique intercultural community within the classroom. The book recognizes key components in the process of immigrant social integration: (1) music education can help facilitate immigrant students’ adjustment to a new culture as they negotiate a hybrid identity. (2) The inclusive nature of samba percussion music encourages communication, cooperation, and empathy, helping students to build life skills. (3) By blending rhythms from their countries of origin with a pop song of choice for their final composition, the students create their own interculture.Deriving from culturally responsive music teaching practices, this study will inspire music teachers and music education researchers to transfer some of the methods to center students’ languages, identities, and cultural references in their curricula.
Undoing Things: How Objects, Bodies and Worlds Come Apart (Archaeological Orientations)
by Gavin Lucas Shannon Lee DawdyUndoing Things explores all the ways in which things become undone, be they objects, bodies, places, or worlds.Although archaeologists have long attended to the productive dimensions of materiality and material culture as a coherent phenomenon—making objects, building things, constructing identities—the discourse around undoing is more fragmented. Topics such as ruination, death, decay, demolition, and collapse are usually examined separately. Undoing Things asks what connections or continuities can be discerned in a diverse range of practices, both intentional and taphonomic, both destructive and healing. Is there a creative component to undoing? How visible are different processes of undoing? How is time implicated? Is undoing reversible? Who has the power to undo and when is undoing empowering? What does it take to undo knowledge? These and other questions are examined through archaeological studies ranging from classical Maya and colonial Caribbean examples to present-day Liberia, historical and ethnographic approaches to present-day Argentina, and the contemporary art world. In the first quarter of the 21st century, human worlds have experienced a series of ruptures from climate-related disasters, political violence, and the Covid-19 pandemic. Undoing Things helps move us beyond a cloud of chaos with a deeper understanding of how and why things fall apart and is vital reading for archaeologists and those in related disciplines.
At the Margins of Empire: Frontiers and Boundaries in British India (Empire and Frontiers)
by Lipokmar Dzüvichü and Manjeet BaruahEmpire building in British India was inseparably tied to the processes of frontier-making and the creation of boundaries. Through a range of complex practices and developments, the constitution of these spaces took shape at various historical conjunctures. The making of these spaces was also shaped by a variety of imperial concerns, including local and global processes, connections, and entanglements. Focusing on the period between the 19th and the early 20th centuries, this book looks at how the dynamics of frontier and boundary creation were shaped by a variety of agents, institutions, infrastructure and technologies, events, economy, travel, forms of representation, and imperial rivalries. The role of capital, war, and violence was also intrinsic to the creation of such spaces. Further, societies in these spaces responded to these processes in various ways. The book examines how they negotiated and mediated these complex developments of modern space-making in multiple ways at the margins of empire.Part of the Empire and Frontiers series, this book will be of interest to researchers and readers of history, anthropology, cultural studies, social and cultural history, frontiers, boundaries and borderland studies, Himalayan studies, and studies of commodities and circulations.

Interrogating Development: The Mobilisation of Science, Technologies, and Technical Assistance in Postwar Mexico
by Gisela Mateos Edna Suárez-DíazThis volume explores the diverse meanings and ways of implementing development programs and technical assistance projects, through several case studies grounded in Mexico but transcending its geography. Despite – or perhaps because of – claims of &“revolutionary nationalism&”, Mexico played a crucial international role during the decades following World War II, both by challenging and enacting developmentalist models, values, and projects that stressed national priorities, resonating beyond its borders and even outside Latin America. Energy, irrigation, communication infrastructures, nuclear technologies, public health, and patents, are meaningful examples explored in this volume of the mobilisation of science and technologies understood in a broad sense, including not only the natural and social sciences, but also bureaucratic technologies that accompanied infrastructural and industrial projects. These case studies interrogate the specific agents and mechanisms of technical assistance put to work to meet local priorities, which in turn required and informed different international models and ideas of development.
