From Stage to Studio: Performances versus Recordings in Classical Music (Routledge Research in Music)

by Amy Blier-Carruthers

From Stage to Studio: Performances versus Recordings in Classical Music presents a cultural study of classical music-making through the analysis of live and studio performances of orchestral and operatic repertoire conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras. The close listening analysis is based on detailed research into Mackerras’s private collection of over 600 reel-to-reel and cassette tapes containing recordings of over 1,000 live performances which he conducted between the 1950s and the late 1990s. This is contextualized with evidence collected during ethnographic fieldwork observations, presenting the opinions of Sir Charles, orchestral musicians from major London orchestras and opera houses with whom he was working with during the first decade of the twenty-first century (Philharmonia, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Royal Opera House, English National Opera), and production team members working for recording industry leaders (such as Decca, EMI, and Chandos). This ethnography of classical music-making gives a voice to performers and music professionals, brings to light some important and heretofore hidden issues, and explores a fascinating time of intense change in the recording industry.Including consideration of ways forward for performance, education, and recording, this book is relevant to specialist practitioners, as well as music enthusiasts interested in concert life and recording studio habits, professional performers, recordists, music students, educators, and scholars interested in classical music.

Set Theory: An Introduction to Axiomatic Reasoning (Textbooks in Mathematics)

by Robert André

Contemporary students of mathematics differ considerably from those of half a century ago. In spite of this, many textbooks written decades ago, and now considered to be “classics”, are still prescribed for students today. These texts are not suitable for today’s students. This text is meant for and written to today’s mathematics students. Set theory is a pure mathematics endeavor in the sense that it seems to have no immediate applications; yet the knowledge and skills developed in such a course can easily branch out to various fields of both pure mathematics and applied mathematics.Rather than transforming the reader into a practicing mathematician, this book is more designed to initiate the reader to what may be called “mathematical thinking” while developing knowledge about foundations of modern mathematics. Without this insight, becoming a practicing mathematician is much more daunting. The main objective is twofold. The students will develop some fundamental understanding of the foundations of mathematics and elements of set theory, in general. In the process, the student will develop skills in proving simple mathematical statements with “mathematical rigor”.Carefully presented detailed proofs and rigorous chains of logical arguments will guide the students from the fundamental ZFC-axioms and definitions to show why a basic mathematical statement must hold true. The student will recognize the role played by each fundamental axiom in development of modern mathematics. The student will learn to distinguish between a correct mathematical proof and an erroneous one. The subject matter is presented while bypassing the complexities encountered when using formal logic.

by Richard M. Billow

In this comprehensive volume, Richard M. Billow provides a thorough introduction to group psychotherapy from a psychoanalytic perspective. Billow integrates contemporary psychoanalytic thinking with Freudian and Kleinian core concepts, as well as Bion’s early group theory and his later metapsychology, to provide a holistic overview of group therapy and its potential benefits for patients. He incorporates major psychoanalytic thinkers outside the American relational mainstream – such as Lacan, Laplanche, Kaes, Foulkes, and Pichon Riviere, as well as his own prominent contributions to the field – to provide a unique and interdisciplinary overview. Throughout the chapters, readers will be introduced to challenging clinical experiences that illustrate some of the similarities and differences among psychoanalytic and other psychodynamic group approaches. Offering guidelines on how to harness and conduct the group, Billow provides exceptional insight into the veritable benefits of maintaining an analytic stance within the clinical setting. Written in a clear and accessible style, this book is a vital tool for students and professionals interested in a thorough overview of psychoanalytically-based group treatments.

Chinese Diaspora Politics in Australia: Transnational Repression and Social Governance (Routledge Research on the Global Politics of Migration)

by Abigail Young

Integrating theory on diaspora politics and the growing academic area of non-state transnational repression, Young charts the historical and political evolution of the Chinese diaspora and examines Australia’s approach to national security policies. In recent decades, Chinese migration has increased exponentially in Australia. For a society that has largely accepted racial homogeneity as a precursor to nationhood, contemporary Chinese migrants must find unique transnational spaces where they can belong in the hostland while maintaining important connections to the homeland. Young identifies the emergence of ‘transnational social governance’, a form of control that is perpetrated by the contemporary patriotic Chinese migrant (the xinqiao) against other Chinese migrants in Australia. It is a phenomenon facilitated by a feedback loop of the non-welcoming Australian society and well-established co-ethnic spaces, allowing for xinqiao to dominate Chinese diasporic communities and transfer Chinese Communist Party (CCP)-aligned narratives. Drawing upon statistical data and interview-based case studies, this book provides a comprehensive contextual and epistemological examination of the politics of the Chinese diaspora in Australia.A valuable resource for scholars, students, researchers, and professionals interested in the academic and popular perspectives of diaspora politics affecting Australia-China relations.

Unforgiving Places: The Unexpected Origins of American Gun Violence

by Jens Ludwig

What if everything we understood about gun violence was wrong? In 2007, economist Jens Ludwig moved to the South Side of Chicago to research two big questions: Why does gun violence happen, and is there anything we can do about it? Almost two decades later, the answers aren’t what he expected. Unforgiving Places is Ludwig’s revelatory portrait of gun violence in America’s most famously maligned city. Disproving the popular narrative that shootings are the calculated acts of malicious or desperate people, Ludwig shows how most shootings actually grow out of a more fleeting source: interpersonal conflict, especially arguments. By examining why some arguments turn tragic while others don't, Ludwig shows gun violence to be more circumstantial—and more solvable—than our traditional approaches lead us to believe. Drawing on decades of research and Ludwig’s immersive fieldwork in Chicago, including “countless hours spent in schools, parks, playgrounds, housing developments, courtrooms, jails, police stations, police cars, and lots and lots of McDonald'ses,” Unforgiving Places is a breakthrough work at the cutting edge of behavioral economics. As Ludwig shows, progress on gun violence doesn’t require America to solve every other social problem first; it only requires that we find ways to intervene in the places and the ten-minute windows where human behaviors predictably go haywire.

Control Strategies for Non-minimum Phase Systems (Studies in Infrastructure and Control)

by Manish Yadav Ashutosh K. Giri Stepan Ozana

This book provides overview of numerous control schemes for non-minimum phase and dead-time systems. The inverse response arises from the conflict of two first-order systems with opposite effects. This feature of the system is known as non-minim phase (NMP) process. The opposite response initiates from odd multiplicity of NMP open-loop zeros. As a result, the controller shows a limited gain margin and bandwidth, implying a robustness restriction. If the user tries to increase the gain, system sometimes gets unstable. Thus, the fundamental notion of providing a suitable balance control theory can potentially improve the performance of those processes. This book is useful to researchers working in the field of control system. The book provides comprehensive philosophy of different control schemes used for the non-minimum phase zeros and dead-time systems. The researcher working on non-minimum phase zeros can find innovative algorithms and novel schemes. Further, they can design innovative control schemes by referring to the content of chapters and specifically tuning after encountering NMP zeros and delay terms.

The Anthropology of Human and Planetary Health: An Ecosyndemic Approach (Springer Texts in Social Sciences)

by Merrill Singer

This text introduces undergraduate and graduate students in health or environment-related classes to the mounting crisis of syndemics through the lens of planetary health. The concept of syndemics, developed by the author and now in wide use across multiple health-related disciplines, focuses attention on the adverse synergistic interaction of two or more diseases or other health conditions promoted or facilitated by social and/or environmental conditions. The planetary health framework is an emerging holistic medical rethinking of our understanding of health. It seeks to identify the safe environmental limits within which humanity and other species can flourish on our increasingly imperiled planet. This book offers useful conceptual tools and frameworks for developing a comprehensive understanding of approaches needed to address the health risks of our changing world. The unique coverage of this book is its careful examination of ecosyndemics around the world in light of the growing recognition that on a heavily disrupted planet, a narrow focus on human health is inadequate. Under these circumstances, a comprehensive planetary health framework is needed. This approach seriously considers the interconnected nature of human health, animal and plant health, and the health of the world’s ecosystems. Highly descriptive, with numerous cases of the planetary health crisis, the textbook is written in a student-friendly and accessible way and is an important resource for coursework across environment and health-related subjects.

The Art of Orality: Cultural Aesthetics in the Absence of Writing

by Declan Lloyd

This book considers how the presence or absence of writing can influence a culture&’s distinctive styles of visual art, proposing that many of the most profound developments in the art world are directly correlative with a cultural transition from orality to literacy (that is, from a culture which only has a spoken form of language, to one which has both a spoken and written form). The study contemplates how the &‘psychodynamics&’ of orality might radically affect artistic expression, resulting in a range of visual traits which in many ways reflect the unique modes of speech within primary oral societies. Looking to the art of a diverse range of cultures and time periods – including Archaic Greek art, medieval art, African tribal art, child art, Outsider art and Modern art – The Art of Orality considers what new insights can be gleaned by bringing these styles into dialogue with orality and literacy studies.

Political Argumentation in Early America: Informal Fallacies in Selected Debates 1789 to 1800

by Juhani Rudanko Paul Rickman

This book investigates the language used by protagonists in four major political debates in the early history of the United States. The first of these concerns the controversy in the first United States House of Representatives in the summer of 1789 on whether a proposal for a bill of rights should be considered in an expeditious fashion or whether the issue should be left till much later. The second is the principal debate on whether a sedition act should be enacted in July 1798, and the third concerns the enactment of the Logan Act of 1799. The fourth investigates the elections for the Legislature of the State of New York in the spring of 1800, which was the key event affecting the outcome of the presidential election of 1800. In each case there was a sharp disagreement between groups of politicians representing different points of view, and each event was significant from the point of view of the political history of the United States. The authors introduce these four debates, as well as the notion of informal fallacy - taken to designate an argument that is unsatisfactory in some way - before analysing deceptive fallacies and demonstrating how fallacy theory can be used as a critical tool in the examination of political argumentation. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of political communication, rhetoric and argumentation, US history and politics, and diachronic linguistics, especially diachronic pragmatics.
