by Hans Joachim Schlichting

Traumatic Neurosis Revisited: Drive-jouissance and the Wounds of Life (The Palgrave Lacan Series)

by Leslie Chapman

This book argues that Freud&’s theory of the traumatic neuroses can provide a &‘conceptual bridge&’ between the Lacanian idea of an &‘inaugural&’ or &‘founding&’ trauma that constitutes the human subject and the more popular idea that trauma is brought about by external events, for example, war or sexual violence. It proposes a new reading of Freud&’s theory which draws on Lacanian concepts, including the Real, jouissance, the idea of &‘suture&’, and Lacan&’s &‘deconstruction&’ of Freud&’s drive theory. It also argues for a &‘cybernetic&’ reading of Lacan&’s theory of language, which he outlined in his second Seminar; and for a reappraisal of Freud&’s concept of Nachträglichkeit as a way to facilitate a better understanding of the retroactive nature of trauma and its relation to language and the drive. In doing so, it offers a challenge to key assumptions underpinning the dominant discourse of trauma, which is exemplified in what the author terms &‘the PTSD paradigm&’. In particular it challenges the idea that trauma is something that simply &‘happens&’ to human beings and that its effects that can be eradicated through the construction of various forms of trauma narrative, for example, in psychotherapy and different types of collective histories. In the development of this argument the author also draws on the work of Jean Laplanche, which has previously been under-utilised in mainstream Lacanian theory and practice. This book sheds new light on the relationship between the traumatic effects of the signifier and the impact of the &‘external&’ world. It will be of interest to practitioners, as well as to students and scholars of psychoanalysis and philosophy.

Chord Transformations in Higher-Dimensional Networks

by Rafael Cubarsi

Chord Transformations in Higher-Dimensional Networks proposes an in-depth formal framework for generalized Tonnetze. It takes an algebraic approach and studies systems of k-chords in n-TET scales derived from a given k-mode (array of step intervals) through mode permutations and chord root translations, by combining key ideas of the neo-Riemannian Tonnetz theories with serial approaches to chordal structures. In particular, it provides the generalization of the neo-Riemannian P, R, L transformations via the notion of ‘drift’ operator, which is the main novelty of the approach. At the same time, the book is thorough in building the formal framework covering many moments and details, with special attention to trichords and tetrachords, which allow the geometric visualization of their structure helping to understand the more abstract transformations in higher-dimensional networks.Features Chord transformations are explained from a new approach, by considering the chord as a two-component entity (root and mode), which is simpler than that of the neo-Riemannian theory The chords transformations presented can be easily converted to computational algorithms to deal with higher-dimensional Tonnetze Presents the study of chords with a scope that goes from scratch up to higher levels, about to develop research works

Metakognitive Verstehensurteile beim Lernen aus Texten: Eine experimentelle Untersuchung des Einflusses instruktionaler Hinweise

by Jennifer Knellesen

Constructing the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime: The Participation Puzzle

by Leonardo Bandarra

Scholars and practitioners usually regard the nuclear non-proliferation regime as composed of two categories of countries – those with and those without nuclear weapons. The latter are regarded as the core designers of that regime, while the former have their prominence in shaping non-proliferation institutions eclipsed or ignored. This book proposes to go beyond that duality by focusing on a usually neglected group of states: latent nuclear countries. Those are the countries that possess advanced nuclear capabilities but no weapons. This book shows that latent nuclear countries not only participate actively in non-proliferation institutions but also promote the creation of new frameworks highlighting concerns and perspectives different from their nuclear-weapon and nuclear-free counterparts. The author makes this argument through an intricate combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, with an in-depth analysis of Brazil and Germany as sources for case studies. He makes the case to understand the nuclear non-proliferation regime as an inclusive and refined approach that takes into consideration countries’ nuclear capabilities, identities, role conceptions, and domestic structures.
