Modernizing .NET Web Applications: Everything You Need to Know About Migrating ASP.NET Web Applications to the Latest Version of .NET
by Tomáš HercegIn 2016, Microsoft introduced the new generation of .NET called .NET Core. It brought many fundamental improvements to the platform, but there were also many breaking changes and missing APIs, especially when it comes to creating web applications. Upgrading any website running on .NET Framework to the new .NET Core proved to be a complex process, which can take months or even years. This book describes two approaches you can take to incrementally modernize legacy .NET web applications. It explains the changes that happened in ASP.NET MVC, ASP.NET Web API, Entity Framework, ASP.NET Identity, SignalR, and other libraries. It also shows a migration path for applications written in ASP.NET Web Forms: a technology which isn’t supported in the new .NET at all. In addition, the book describes the new frameworks available in the ASP.NET Core platform (Blazor, Razor Pages, ASP.NET Core MVC, SignalR Core, and so on) and helps you decide which technology will be the best fit. The book also covers several “soft” areas: how to explain the benefits or necessity for the modernization to your company management, how to deal with refactoring and improving the overall code quality during the entire process, and how to adjust the architecture of the application to be ready for another technology upgrade in the future. The topic of modernization is highly relevant. There are still plenty of legacy .NET applications that are being actively developed and maintained. Many of them were developed for 10+ years, they involve plethora of company-specific know-how, and it is not economically feasible to rewrite them from scratch. What You Will Learn Discover the changes you need to make in a legacy ASP.NET application to migrate it to .NET 8 and beyond Estimate the required effort and prepare the entire process Use the In-place or Side-by-side approach to modernize your application incrementally Migrate from ASP.NET Web Services or WCF to REST or gRPC Migrate from ASP.NET SignalR to SignalR Core or from Entity Framework to EF Core Migrate from Forms Authentication to ASP.NET Identity Migrate ASP.NET Web Forms to Blazor Server or DotVVM Migrate ASP.NET MVC and Web Pages to ASP.NET Core MVC and Razor Pages Refactor and clean up your codebase to make it more maintainable Who This Book Is For .NET developers who work with ASP.NET web applications running on the .NET framework, and tech leads and software architects who make technical decisions about legacy .NET projects used in their organization

Circadian Clock and Aging
by Syed Ibrahim Rizvi Gaurav MajumdarThis book aims to understand the inherent circadian cycles of biological processes and their role in maintaining health and healing a variety of diseases. The book is divided into eight sections. The first section introduces circadian rhythms and aging. The second section focuses on the detailed mechanistic approach of oscillatory pathways in mammals. The next section summarizes the sensitivity of the biological clock towards light and the circadian response to melatonin in mammals. The fourth section addresses the circadian architecture at the cellular level and introduces an age-dependent experimental model of rodents for subsequent biochemical and molecular investigations. The subsequent section covers the complexity of circadian regulation in mitochondrial dynamics and its impact on aging. The sixth section of the book discusses the findings obtained from different experimental approaches as a critical threat to the functioning of clock regulatory mechanisms and its associated health consequences during aging in humans and animal models. The circadian oscillatory mechanisms that are dysregulated and might play an important role in the development and progression of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Huntington’s Disease (HD), and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), etc are discussed in the next section. Towards the end, the book explores the circadian clock as a possible drug target to restore circadian oscillations.
Moses, Muhammad and Nature’s God in Early American Religious-Legal History, 1640-1830: A Global Crosscultural Perspective
by R. Charles WellerThis is the first comparative study of Mosaic and Islamic law in American history to be published. Constructing a complex picture in trans-Atlantic, trans-European and world historical perspectives, this book elucidates the intersections that lie beneath and behind the rise of the debates in the 1990s and 2000s over the promotion of the Ten Commandments and Mosaic Law as alleged sources of American Constitutional law and symbols of American national identity. These debates have taken shape in close connection with resurgent anti-Semitism, anti-Sharia protests and anti-Sharia legislation throughout the United States and other Western societies.

How the World Works (Real Story Ser.)
by Noam ChomskyAn eye-opening introduction to the timelessly relevant ideas of Noam Chomsky, this book is a penetrating, illusion-shattering look at how things really work"Arguably the most important intellectual alive." —The New York TimesOffering something not found anywhere else, How the World Works is pure Chomsky, but tailored for those who are new to his work. The book is made up of meticulously edited speeches and interviews, and every dazzling idea and penetrating insight is kept intact and delivered in clear, accessible, reader-friendly prose.Originally published as a series of short works—What Uncle Sam Really Wants; The Prosperous Few and the Restless Many; Secrets, Lies and Democracy; and The Common Good—these volumes together sold nearly 600,000 copies. Now collected into one comprehensive anthology, How the World Works reveals how Chomsky&’s then-revolutionary ideas have only become more relevant as time has gone by.From the concept that extreme wealth and democracy cannot exist side-by-side; to how the assumptions of mainstream media purposefully limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion; to the decline of unions and workers&’ rights thanks to corporations and their unconstrained quest for profit, Chomsky&’s prescient theories of the future—not only the future of the United States, but of the world—make it very clear that our society is paying the price now for not heeding him then.
