Water from the Rock: Black Resistance in a Revolutionary Age
by Sylvia R. FreyA multifaceted history of Black resistance during the War of IndependenceThe American Revolution brought about violent and unpredictable social changes throughout the new nation, particularly in the South. Sylvia Frey reveals how slave resistance gave rise to a Black liberation movement that was central to the revolutionary struggle in the southern colonies, and how Black resistance persisted after the war as a struggle for cultural power that manifested itself in the establishment of separate Black churches with distinctive ritual patterns and moral values. She examines how white Southerners responded to Black resistance amid their own fight for independence from the British, and how they reacted to new movements by African Americans in the postwar period. With an incisive foreword by Manisha Sinha, Water from the Rock shows how the upheavals of war created opportunities for a quiet revolution that laid the foundations for the modern civil rights movement in America.
State of Ridicule: A History of Satire in English Literature
by Dan SperrinA history of political satire in English literature from its Roman foundations to the present day Satire is a funny, aggressive, and largely oppositional literature which is typically created by people who refuse to participate in a given regime&’s perception of itself. Although satire has always been a primary literature of state affairs, and although it has always been used to intervene in ongoing discussions about political theory and practice, there has been no attempt to examine this fascinating and unusual literature across the full chronological horizon. In State of Ridicule, Dan Sperrin provides the first ever longue durée history of political satire in British literature. He traces satire&’s many extended and discontinuous trajectories through time while also chronicling some of the most inflamed and challenging political contexts within which it has been written.Sperrin begins by describing the Roman foundations and substructures of British satire, paying particularly close attention to the core Roman canon: Horace, Persius, and Juvenal. He then proceeds chronologically, populating the branches of satire&’s family tree with such figures as Chaucer, Jonson, Dryden, Swift, Pope, and Dickens, as well as a whole series of writers who are now largely forgotten. Satire, Sperrin shows, can be a literature of explicit statements and overt provocation—but it can also be notoriously indirect, oblique, suggestive, and covert, complicated by an author&’s anonymity or pseudonymity. Sperrin meticulously analyses the references to transient political events that may mystify the contemporary reader. He also presents vivid and intriguing pen portraits of the satirists themselves along the way. Sperrin argues that if satire is to be contended with and reflected upon in all its provocative complexity—and if it is to be seen as anything more than a literature of political vandalism—then we must explore the full depth and intrigue of its past. This book offers a new starting point for our intellectual and imaginative contact with an important and fascinating kind of literature.
From Forest to Steppe: The Russian Art of Building in Wood
by William Craft BrumfieldThroughout Russian history, local craftsmen have shown remarkable skill in fashioning wood into items of daily use, from bridges and street paving to carts and boats to household utensils and combs. Russia has the largest forested zone on the planet, so its architecture was also traditionally made from timber. From homes to churches to forts, Russian buildings are almost all, underneath, constructed with logs, often covered by plank siding or by lathing and plaster. In From Forest to Steppe, renowned scholar and photographer William Craft Brumfield offers a panoramic survey of Russia’s centuries-long heritage of wooden architecture. Lavishly illustrated with more than 400 color photographs, the volume links log-built barns, windmills, houses, and churches in the Far North; Buddhist shrines in the Transbaikal region; and eighteenth-century palaces on the outskirts of Moscow. Brumfield also takes readers to the estate houses of many Russian literary giants, from Chekhov and Tolstoy to Dostoevsky and Pushkin. Spanning thousands of photographed sites, five decades of field work, and seven time zones, Brumfield’s photographs offer compelling evidence of the adaptability of log construction and its ability to transcend class, cultural, and aesthetic boundaries. In the decades since Brumfield began photographing Russian architecture, many of the buildings he has documented have been demolished or abandoned and left to rot at alarming rates. Brumfield observes a contradiction in contemporary Russia: It acknowledges the cultural importance of wooden buildings yet struggles to find and dedicate the resources and solutions needed to save them. A hymn and elegy to the long Russian practice of building with wood, From Forest to Steppe is an unparalleled look into one of the world’s most singular architectural traditions.

The Road That Made America: A Modern Pilgrim's Journey on the Great Wagon Road
by James DodsonIn the bestselling tradition of Rinker Buck&’s The Oregon Trail and Tony Horwitz&’s Confederates in the Attic, The Road That Made America is a lively, epic account of one of the greatest untold stories in our nation&’s history—the eight-hundred-mile long Great Wagon Road that 18th-century American settlers forged from Philadelphia to Georgia that expanded the country dramatically in the decades before we ventured west.Little known today, the Great Wagon Road was the primary road of frontier America: a mass migration route that stretched more than eight hundred miles from Philadelphia to Augusta, Georgia. It opened the Southern frontier and wilderness east of the Appalachian Mountains to America&’s first settlers, and later served as the gateway for the exploration of the American West. In the mid-1700s, waves of European colonists in search of land for new homes left Pennsylvania to settle in the colonial backcountry of Maryland, Virginia, and the Carolinas. More than one hundred thousand settlers made the arduous trek, those who would become the foundational generations of the world&’s first true immigrant nation. In their newly formed village squares, democracy took root and bloomed. During the Revolutionary War, the road served as the key supply line to the American resistance in the western areas of the colonies, especially in the South. Drawing on years of fieldwork and scholarship by an army of archeologists, academics, archivists, preservationists, and passionate history lovers, James Dodson sets out to follow the road&’s original path from Philadelphia to Georgia. On his journey, he crosses six contiguous states and some of the most historic and hallowed landscapes of eastern America, touching many of the nation&’s most sacred battlefields and burying grounds. Due to its strategic importance, military engagements were staged along the Great Wagon Road throughout North America&’s three major wars, including the early days of the bloody French and Indian conflict and pivotal Revolutionary War encounters. In time, the Great Wagon Road became America&’s first technology highway, as growing roadside villages and towns and cities became, in effect, the first incubators of America&’s early Industrial age. The people and ideas that traveled down the road shaped the character of the fledgling nation and helped define who we are today. Dodson&’s ancestors on both sides took the Great Wagon Road to Maryland and North Carolina, respectively, giving him a personal stake in uncovering the road&’s buried legacy. An illuminating and entertaining first-person history, The Road That Made America restores this long-forgotten route to its rightful place in our national story.

The Perfection of Wisdom in First Bloom: Relating Early Astasahasrika Prajnaparamita to Agama Literature
by Bhikkhu AnalayoSee the formative years of Mahayana Buddhist literature through the lens of the Perfection of Wisdom, expertly analyzed by the venerable scholar-monk Bhikkhu Analayo. In this work we have a rare perspective on the early history of Mahayana Buddhism and the Perfection of Wisdom (Prajnaparamita), as far as this is still accessible in surviving texts. With his characteristic clarity and precision, Bhikkhu Analayo critically analyzes early Perfection of Wisdom literature based on the earliest extant versions of the Astasahasrika Prajnaparamita, or the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines, one in Chinese and the other in Gandhari—one of the oldest surviving Mahayana manuscripts discovered to date. In reading this text from the viewpoint of early Buddhist literature, the author shows that what has generally been considered a sharp rupture in the formation of the Mahayana turns out to be more of a gradual evolution. With his command of the languages of the ancient Buddhist world, scholar-monk Bhikkhu Analayo sifts through the layers of history and unveils new perspectives on the ideas and figures in early Perfection of Wisdom and Mahayana literature, covering such topics as the rhetoric of emptiness and the emerging bodhisattva ideal, as well as the status of women and the practice of self-immolation. In doing so, Bhikkhu Analayo reveals fresh insights into the gradual development that informs the emergence of early Perfection of Wisdom literature. This is a rare opportunity to peer through a window at the beginnings of Mahayana thought—before the traditions had coalesced into the familiar forms we see today.
Something Big: The True Story of the Brown's Chicken Massacre, A Decade-Long Manhunt, and the Trials That Followed
by Patrick WohlSomething Big tells the story of the infamous Brown&’s Chicken massacre, a brutal case that captivated Chicagoland after remaining unsolved for nearly a decade.Customers know Brown's Chicken for its crispy buttermilk fried chicken and flaky biscuits. The Illinois-based franchise has a reputation for delicious but simple comfort food. But through no fault of its own, the words "Brown's Chicken" are also synonymous with one fateful night in January of 1993. &“A Real Hometown&” is the trite but apt motto of Palatine, Illinois, a quaint middle-class suburb west of Chicago. On a snowy Friday evening, the staff and owners of the city&’s local Brown&’s Chicken franchise were closing up when two final customers arrived just past 9 p.m. As the night drew on and the employees hadn&’t returned home, the families of the owners and workers began to worry, prompting police to investigate. When they entered the dark building, police were shocked to find seven bodies stacked in the restaurant&’s freezer and fridge. The killers, of course, were long gone. In the months that followed, the horrendous story rocked Chicagoland and the case remained unsolved for nine years. The Brown&’s Chicken massacre is one of the most infamous cases in Illinois history, yet it is often misremembered. In Something Big, Patrick Wohl gives a new account of the story, taking readers behind the scenes and sharing the perspective of the people who lived it.

What Radiology Residents Need to Know: Breast Imaging (What Radiology Residents Need to Know)
by Priscilla J. Slanetz Vandana DialaniThis book is an introduction to breast imaging, specifically designed for the needs of first through third year residents. While rotating through breast imaging, radiology residents are asked to learn significant amounts of information at a fast and unrelenting pace. However, most current books are densely written and contain far more material than residents need to know. Moreover, the number, variety and quality of images is often limited. What Radiology Residents Need to Know: Breast Imaging answers these needs by presenting the important information in bullet fashion, divided into convenient sub-units, such as “clinical information,” “imaging findings” and “management.” This book covers such topics as breast cancer, benign breast disease, image-guided interventions, pregnant and lactating patients, transgender patients, and male breast disease. In addition, it contains tips on approaching and interpreting mammography, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI studies based on decades of practical experience and teaching residents at the work station as well as a list of common differentials. With liberal use of illustrations in the text and an online bank of many more high-quality images, this book gives readers a comprehensive library of breast imaging scans and serves as an ideal guide for radiology residents.

First-Principles and Machine Learning Study of Anharmonic Vibration and Dielectric Properties of Materials (Springer Theses)
by Tomohito AmanoThe book presents the author's development of two first-principles methods to calculate dielectric properties of materials based on anharmonic phonon and machine learning, and demonstrates an in-depth analysis of anharmonic crystals and molecular liquids. The anharmonic phonon method, combined with Born effective charges, is useful to study dielectric properties of crystals. The recently developed self-consistent phonon theory (SCPH) enables accurate simulations in strongly anharmonic materials. The author reveals that the combination of SCPH with the four-phonon scattering term accurately reproduces experimental spectra, and discusses how anharmonic phonon self-energies affect the dielectric properties. The second method is molecular dynamics with Wannier centers—the mass centers of Wannier functions. The author constructs a machine learning model that learns Wannier centers for each chemical bond from atomic coordinates to accurately predict the dipole moments. The developed method is, in principle, applicable to molecules of arbitrary size. Its effectiveness is demonstrated and the dielectric properties of several alcohols, including dipole moments, dielectric constants, and absorption spectra, are analyzed. This book benefits students and researchers interested in anharmonic phonons, machine learning, and dielectric properties.

The Family Strategy: How Families Secure Their Business Across Generations
by Kirsten BausSuccessful entrepreneurial families are stable because they have structures and rules. These form the basis for constructive interaction between the family, shareholders, and the business. Without them, the ability to act is impaired—both in day-to-day operations and strategic decisions, due to conflicts and lack of foresight. Kirsten Baus, an expert in family governance and succession planning, offers the solution with the family strategy. Based on a shared understanding of values, goals, and roles, she develops a stabilizing set of structures and rules with entrepreneurial families. These provide relief, create security and predictability, and reduce conflicts. Most importantly, they make an entrepreneurial family capable of strategy—able to plan ahead and position themselves correctly.
Trendanalysen zur Weiterbildungsbeteiligung: Die selbstinitiierte Teilnahme an beruflicher Weiterbildung in Ost- und Westdeutschland 1991 bis 2018 (Theorie und Empirie Lebenslangen Lernens)
by Anika RosenkranzIn diesem Open-Access-Buch wird untersucht, welche Muster bzw.
