Uncross Your Legs
by Stan HermanIn Uncross Your Legs: A Life in Fashion, learn the story behind the man whose vision, over 60 years, has dramatically helped forge and transform American style. On any given day, more people will be &“wearing&” Stan Herman than any other American fashion designer. As he continues to work and thrive in his 95th year, Herman is the most acclaimed uniform designer of our time. But that is just part of a life well-lived, and well-loved. In Uncross Your Legs: A Life in Fashion, Herman reflects on a remarkable life and career, from his childhood in Brooklyn, NY and Passaic, NJ, to WWII Army service in Europe, and back to NYC as a young freelance designer in the fashion hothouse of the Garment District. Next up, 16 years as head of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, where he was instrumental in bringing New York Fashion Week to Bryant Park – all the while continuing his thriving uniform and leisurewear design business. It&’s also a deeply moving and insightful memoir, following personal triumphs and tragedies, including his nearly 40 year relationship with novelist Gene Horowitz, who suffered a heart attack and passed away in 1992. Together they lived their lives in the shadow of the AIDS crisis that decimated their personal and professional worlds. They also shared a beloved poodle named &“Mozart,&” who helped fill the void when Herman found himself suddenly alone. With equal aplomb, Herman writes with good humor and compassion, recalling the cruel and casual racism he witnessed in the military, his focus on animal rights in the fashion industry – as well as encountering the indignities of one&’s aging anatomy. Learn the story behind the man whose vision, over 60 years, has dramatically helped forge and transform American style.

Posthumanism Meets Surveillance Capitalism: How to Delete the Manifest Image (Palgrave Studies in the Future of Humanity and its Successors)
by Patrick GamezThe core contention of this book is that, when viewed through the lens of contemporary posthuman theory, contemporary uses of AI under platform capitalism not only undermine our sense of the &“human&” but also our frameworks for conceptualizing ourselves as &“subjects&” or &“selves&” at all. This radical conclusion raises issues forces us to reckon with a new, disorienting horizon for critical thought at the intersection of technology and politics. This book demonstrates that two major streams of posthuman thought—namely, accelerationism and Prometheanism—can be interpreted as attempts to liberate our desires from our reason or our rationality from our all-too-human desire, each through the offloading of various tasks to emerging technologies. But, Patrick Gamez argues, the rise of opaque, unexplainable machine learning algorithms to predict and shape our behaviour undermines the common-sense models of mind through which we ultimately make sense of both the human and the posthuman.

Destabilising Manhood and Masculinity: Unbecoming Men in a Violent Gender Order
by Bob PeaseThis book addresses the debate within feminism and critical studies of men and masculinities on whether men should be encouraged to develop alternative masculinities, or whether they should be challenged to renounce masculinity altogether. It argues that men have to move beyond the illusion of masculinity to address their habitual ways of relating that reinforce dominance and oppression and instead foster subjectivities that are multiple and fluid. Tracing the nature of the problem associated with men, masculinity and gender, Pease examines the implications of feminist engagements with Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari to explore the possibilities of destabilising and moving beyond manhood and masculinity. The book will be of interest to scholars in Sociology, Psychology, Social Work and Environmental and Gender Studies, especially as they relate to critical studies of men and masculinities.
