The Price of Our Values: The Economic Limits of Moral Life

by Augustin Landier David Thesmar

The economic case for self-interest at the outer limits of being morally good. Modern life is an exercise in discomfort. In the face of endless injustice, how much selfishness is permissible? How do we square suffering elsewhere with our hope to thrive at home? How does one strive for the greater good while guarding one's personal interests? The Price of Our Values argues that the answers to these questions are economic: by weighing our sense of the personal costs associated with the outer limits of our moral beliefs. These tradeoffs—the want to be good, the personal costs of being good, and the points at which people abandon goodness due to its costs—are somewhat unsettling. But as economists Augustin Landier and David Thesmar show, they are highly predictable, even justified. Our values guide us, but we are also forced to consider economic costs to settle decisions. The Price of Our Values is an economic reckoning with the universal unease of contemporary moral life. Wielding insights from the philosophical founders of the field, Landier and Thesmar provide frameworks for thinking about the place of values—justice, freedom, beauty— in the decisions of modern life. They do so in terms that seek to be consistent with both our good intentions and their limits.

A Companion to Martin Buber

by Paul Mendes-Flohr

A definitive, international guide to the thought of the most important twentieth-century Jewish philosopher. In his 1923 essay, I and Thou, the philosopher, theologian, and activist Martin Buber introduced a philosophy of dialogue that achieved a global, interdisciplinary resonance. For Buber, dialogue was more than a conversation; dialogue discloses something essential about our orientation and our lives with one another. This companion assembles twenty-six scholars from a dozen countries to explore Buber’s international reputation and legacy in education, interfaith relations, Judaism, philosophy, politics, and psychology. The result is an essential guide to one of the most influential Jewish thinkers of the twentieth century.

Court-Ordered Community Service: The Experiences of Community Organizations and Community Service Workers (Elements in Public and Nonprofit Administration)

by Jody Clay-Warner Rebecca Nesbit Su Young Choi

Community service is a common court-ordered sanction in many countries. Individuals sentenced to community service must work a specified number of uncompensated hours at an approved community agency, typically as a condition of probation. A core expectation of court-ordered community service is that the community agencies benefit from this labor. However, very little research examines the organizational and interpersonal dynamics involved when community organizations work with court-ordered community service workers. What are local public and nonprofit organizations' experiences with court-ordered community service workers? How do the workers, themselves, experience court-ordered community service within community agencies? We address these questions through interviews with 31 volunteer managers and 34 court-ordered community service workers in two court jurisdictions in Northeast Georgia. We frame our findings within the volunteer management literature and suggest practices that could improve experiences for both the court-ordered community service worker and the community organization.

Anthropogene Ausbreitung von Pflanzen, ihren Pathogenen und Parasiten

by Thomas Miedaner

The Fundamentals of Thermodynamics (Fundamental Theories of Physics #221)

by Roman Frigg David A. Lavis

The aim of this text is to provide an account of the fundamentals of thermodynamics which is accessible at graduate level to physicists, mathematicians and philosophers of physics. The bulk of the book (Chapters 2-9) is based on the algebraic approach of Lieb and Yngvason, but extended to encompass both positive and negative temperatures and systems in which entropy increases and decreases in adiabatic processes. We show that these four possibilities are already present in Carathéodory's version of the Second Law which arises as a theorem from the axioms. We develop generalized versions of the Kelvin-Planck and Clausius formulations valid for the same range of systems. The parallel development in Chapter 10 takes a geometric approach. We discuss the limitations associated with the local nature of Carathéodory's Principle and present the resolution of this problem due to Boyling. Part of the aim here is to substantiate the claim of Arnold that the mathematical structure of thermodynamics is contact geometry. The last two chapters of the book extend the scope of the discussion to, respectively, critical phenomena and non-equilibrium systems. Chapter 11 is a presentation of phase transitions and critical phenomena in which we discuss universality and use scaling theory to derive scaling laws. Chapter 12 contains a generalization to non-equilibrium. We present the extension of Lieb and Yngvason's work to non-equilibrium and also give a brief account of classical irreversible thermodynamics (CIT). The latter enables a possible understanding of the way that the lack of a unique entropy function in the Lieb and Yngvason non-equilibrium approach can be resolved. The book is completed by a set of appendices which provide mathematical and physical support to the work in the main text.

Nonlinear Optical Materials for All-Optical Switching Applications (Progress in Optical Science and Photonics #33)

by Rajesh Sharma

This book highlights the background and fundamentals of nonlinear optical materials in relation to all-optical switching applications. It explains major aspects of nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption phenomena which are essential to decide the figure-of-merit of various materials for the all-optical switching. Autocorrelation technique, frequency-resolved optical gating, spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction, grating-eliminated no-nonsense observation of ultrafast incident laser light e-fields are discussed to measure the temporal and spectral profiles of the ultrafast pulsed lasers. Advanced nonlinear optical characterization methods such as single- and dual-arm Z-scan, pump-probe and beam deflection techniques are also discussed at length. The transmission signal obtained in the majority of the nonlinear optical effects is found to be weak which creates hiccups to obtain faster switching speeds. Various solutions are discussed to overcome these existing limitations of the all-optical switching-based devices. Optical nonlinearities in semiconductors, organic molecules and challenges in all-optical switching devices are also addressed in the book.

Gemeinwohlorientierte Unternehmensführung und Transaktionskostentheorie: Theorie und empirische Evidenz

by Johannes Ziegler

Iqbal’s Poetic Vision, Metaphysics, and Evolution (Islam & Science)

by Logan David Siler

This book explores Muhammad Iqbal&’s poetic vision of a universe in a state of becoming, and, by putting this vision in conversation with contemporary metaphysical models, articulates the contribution Iqbal&’s vision makes to discussions about Islamic theology, philosophy, and science. To do so, the book articulates Iqbal&’s critique of the Islamic tradition and distinguishes his system from classical Islamic thought while also highlighting his positive influences in this regard (Al-Biruni, Suhrawardi, etc). It explores features of Iqbal&’s vision in light of contemporary metaphysical models by emphasizing three key elements of his thought—metaphysics of becoming, panentheism and panpsychism. While locating Iqbal within the spectrum of these particular schools of thought, Logan David Siler discusses the strengths of his position, and reveals the relevance of his thought to the religion and science conversation—particularly in the realm of evolutionary biology. It is these realms of thought that articulate the most formidable challenges to the theistic view. Yet, Iqbal offers a vision which provides a means to challenge the more metaphysical claims of scientism. Additionally, Siler critiques the shortcomings of Iqbal's vision and offers suggestions for how to improve it.

Gregor Mendel: Versuche über Pflanzen-Hybriden (Klassische Texte der Wissenschaft)

by Uwe Hoßfeld Michael Mielewczik Michal V. Simunek
