Shelter on the Journey: Humanitarianism, Human Rights, and Migration

by Priscilla Solano

Migration journeys are arduous, with migrants tormented by risk, abuse, threats, and xenophobia. Shelters, staffed by humanitarian workers and volunteers, provide safe spaces for those in transit. Shelter on the Journey examines how these sites, often faith-based civil society associations, create solidarity and help politicize migrants, giving them a sense of themselves as an empowered, rights-holding people. Solano, who volunteered at shelters in Mexico, chronicles the activity in three of the nearly 100 shelters along a unique humanitarian trail that many Central Americans take to reach the United States. She outlines the constraints faced by these sites and their potential to create social transformation and considers how and why migration security is currently framed and managed as both a criminal and humanitarian issue. Shelter on the Journey explores the politics of the shelters, their social world, and the dynamics of charity and solidarity, as well as the need for humanitarian assistance and advocacy for dignified and free transit migration.

Reforming Philadelphia, 1682–2022 (PLAC: Political Lessons from American Cities)

by Richardson Dilworth

Reforming Philadelphia examines the cyclical efforts of insurgents to change the city’s government over nearly 350 years. Political scientist Richardson Dilworth tracks reformers as they create a new purpose for the city or reshape the government to reflect emerging ideas. Some wish to thwart the “corrupt machine,” while others seek to gain control of the government via elections. These actors formed coalitions and organizations that disrupted the status quo in the hope of transforming the city (and perhaps also enriching themselves). Dilworth addresses Philadelphia’s early development through the present day, including momentous changes from its new city charter in 1885 and the Republican machine that emerged around the same time to its transformation to a Democratic stronghold in the 1950s, when the city also experienced a racial transition. Focusing primarily on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Dilworth evaluates the terms of Mayors Frank Rizzo, Wilson Goode, and Ed Rendell, as well as John Street, Michael Nutter, and Jim Kenney to illustrate how power and resistance function, and how Philadelphia’s political history and reform cycles offer a conceptual model that can easily be applied to other cities. Reforming Philadelphia provides a new framework for understanding the evolving relationship between national politics and local, city politics.

Justice Outsourced: The Therapeutic Jurisprudence Implications of Judicial Decision-Making by Nonjudicial Officers

by Kelly Frailing Michael L. Perlin

Nonjudicial officers (NJOs) permeate the criminal justice and the forensic mental health systems in hidden ways. But what are the impact and consequences of non-lawyers and non- “real judges” hearing cases? Across the nation, numerous cases are outsourced to administrative and other NJOs to decide issues ranging from family court cases involving custody disputes and foster care, to alcohol, substance abuse, as well as mental health and institutionalization issues. Moreover, NJOs may also deal with probation sentencing, conditions of confinement, release restrictions, and even capital punishment. The editors and contributors to the indispensable Justice Outsourced examine the hidden role of these non-judicial officers in the courtroom and administrative settings, as well as the ethical and practical considerations of using NJOs. Written from the perspective of therapeutic jurisprudence by judges, criminologists, lawyers, law professors, psychologists, and sociologists, this volume provides a much-needed wake-up call that emphasizes why the removal of a judge weakens a defendant’s rights and dignity and corrupts the administration of justice. However, Justice Outsourced also suggests effective employments of NJOs, revealing the potential of therapeutic principles and procedures to enhance the practical knowledge supplied by nonjudicial decision-makers.

Words like Water: Queer Mobilization and Social Change in China

by Caterina Fugazzola

After China officially “decriminalized” same-sex behavior in 1997, both the visibility and public acceptance of tongzhi, an inclusive identity term that refers to nonheterosexual and gender nonconforming identities in the People’s Republic of China, has improved. However, for all the positive change, there are few opportunities for political and civil rights advocacy under Xi Jinping’s authoritarian rule. Words like Water explores the nonconfrontational strategies the tongzhi movement uses in contemporary China. Caterina Fugazzola analyzes tongzhi organizers’ conceptualizations of, and approaches to, social change, explaining how they avoid the backlash that meets Western tactics, such as protests, confrontation, and language about individual freedoms. In contrast, the groups’ intentional use of community and family-oriented narratives, discourses, and understandings of sexual identity are more effective, especially in situations where direct political engagement is not possible. Providing on-the-ground stories that examine the social, cultural, and political constraints and opportunities, Words like Water emphasizes the value of discursive flexibility that allows activists to adapt to changing social and political conditions.

The Brookwood Killers: Military Murderers of World War Two

by Paul Johnson

&‘This little bit of dark twisted history is well worth the time.&’ - Casper Hileman Nestled deep in the Surrey countryside stands the Brookwood 1939-1945 Memorial. Maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, its panels contain the names of nearly 3,500 men and women of the land forces of Britain and the Commonwealth who died in the Second World War and who have no known grave. Among the men and women who names are carved on the memorial are Special Operations Executive agents who died as prisoners or while working with Allied underground movements, servicemen killed in the various raids on enemy occupied territory in Europe, such as Dieppe and Saint-Nazaire, men and women who died at sea in hospital ships and troop transports, British Army parachutists, and even pilots and aircrew who lost their lives in flying accidents or in aerial combat. But the panels also hide a dark secret. Entwined within the names of heroes and heroines are those of nineteen men whose last resting place is known, and whose deaths were less than glorious. All were murderers who, following a civil or military trial, were executed for the heinous offence they had committed. The bodies of these individuals, with the exception of one, lay buried in un-consecrated ground. As Paul Johnson reveals, the cases of the Brookwood Killers are violent, disturbing and often brutal in their content. They are not war crimes, but crimes committed in a time of war, for which the offender has their name recorded and maintained in perpetuity. Something that is not always applied in the case of the victim.&‘A well-written and researched book about servicemen who died in WWII and whose names are inscribed alongside actual heroes of the war, but who aren't heroes at all.&’ Monica Mac&‘An enlightening book from a completely different perspective of criminals and tragically, their victims during the war&’. Brenda GR&‘A great read for the true crime enthusiast.&’ Ron Baumer

Oboe One, Tarakan, 1945: An Australian Tragedy

by Peter Stanley

In 1945, the small island of Tarakan off Borneo's coast became the unlikely stage for one of the Second World War's most gruelling campaigns. As part of General Douglas MacArthur's plan to liberate the Netherlands Indies, Australian soldiers launched Operation Oboe One, a mission to capture Tarakan&’s airstrip. What was meant to last three weeks stretched into two months of bitter jungle warfare, claiming 240 Australian lives and 1,500 Japanese defenders. The airstrip&’s strategic goal faltered, but the courage and sacrifice of those who fought there remain untold. Through vivid narratives and exhaustive research, Oboe One brings this obscure battle to life, uncovering the grit and camaraderie of the Second Australian Imperial Force. These citizen soldiers faced dense jungles, hidden mines, and relentless enemy fire, embodying professionalism and resilience in the war&’s final days. Their experiences reveal not just the hardships of combat, but the unique ethos of a generation shaped by a vanished Australia—an era of robust, unpolished camaraderie and quiet determination. This compelling account revisits Tarakan through the eyes of its participants and confronts lingering questions about the campaign's necessity. Was it a strategic misstep or a justified sacrifice within the larger Pacific war effort? Tarakan challenges readers to remember the forgotten, honour the fallen, and understand the extraordinary men whose lives were forever marked by this brutal campaign. For those seeking to explore the human cost of war, Tarakan is an essential tribute to courage, leadership, and the enduring echoes of an extraordinary Australian legacy.

The Making of Auschwitz: The Largest Killing Factory of all time

by Ian Baxter

"A chilling blueprint for genocide, The Making of Auschwitz uncovers the deadly architecture behind the largest mass murder factory in history."Commemorating 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, The Making of Auschwitz reveals the chilling construction of the largest mass murder factory in history. Drawing from hundreds of captured German documents, architectural plans, and key records from the Building Office archive, this book provides a unique historical source detailing the architectural and operational planning behind the genocide. It explores how the SS relied on civilian expertise to install crucial systems like electricity, sewage, and heating, and how external contractors eagerly participated for financial gain. From the earliest days of Birkenau's construction in 1941 to the inclusion of crematoria and gas chambers by 1943, the book traces the evolution of the camp into an industrial killing machine. Despite Himmler&’s order in 1944 to dismantle the extermination facilities, many structures remained intact when the Red Army arrived on January 27, 1945. The discovery of crucial construction blueprints, untouched by the SS&’s attempt to destroy them, offers an undeniable record of the atrocities planned and executed at Auschwitz. With rare photographs, detailed captions, and a comprehensive analysis, this book provides an essential study of those responsible for the murder of over 1 million people.

The Last Outlaws: The crimes of Jimmy & Joe Governor and the birth of modern Australia

by Katherine Biber

Brilliantly reconstructed from contemporary narratives, The Last Outlaws is both a gripping work of historical true crime and a richly revealing examination of our nation at its birth. The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith meets Killing for Country. In the winter of 1900, Wiradjuri man Jimmy Governor and his brother Joe murdered nine people across New South Wales, in a rampage that caused panic in the colony on the cusp of nationhood. Triggered, it seems, by a racist incident, they killed men, women and children, evading a vast manhunt until they were eventually captured. Joe was shot in the open; Jimmy survived to be put on trial. Thus the last man to be outlawed in the colony was hanged in the new nation, meeting his end in Darlinghurst Gaol as the Federation decorations were taken down. The brothers&’ names still resonate, partly due to Thomas Keneally&’s novel The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith and Fred Schepisi&’s subsequent film, but their story has remained distorted and obscure. Undertaken with the co-operation of the Governors' descendants, Katherine Biber&’s compelling reconstruction of events – from the murders themselves to Jimmy&’s eventual execution – brings this extraordinary story back to life. In doing so it sheds fresh, vivid light on the country that inspired and reacted to the murders. Not only did many of the lawyers and politicians involved also play key roles in Federation, but the case revealed in microcosm the psychology of the nascent nation: its attitudes to land and race; its anxiety about a wider First Nations insurrection; its obsession with paperwork and the emerging &‘sciences&’ of neuroanatomy and criminology; its nepotism, religiosity, sweeping police powers and sensationalist media. More powerfully than the story of Ned Kelly or the Anzacs, the fate of Jimmy Governor illuminates the origin story of the Australian nation. Populated by a cast of extraordinary characters and compelling detail, The Last Outlaws brings the energy of true crime into the telling of history, offering an electric new understanding of both our past and our present.

Inequalities and Interventions: Autonomous Adaptation to Climate Change (SpringerBriefs in Climate Studies)

by Nisar Kannangara Kalaiarasi Kandhan Sagunthala

This book represents an original investigation employing a multidisciplinary approach to elucidate autonomous adaptation, which denotes the spontaneous responses of individuals and communities to mitigate the impacts and seize the opportunities arising from climate change in Indian contexts. It systematically examines the diverse socio-political and economic transformations precipitated by ecological shifts in villages situated across varied terrains in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, renowned as one of India's most vulnerable regions to climate change variables. Through meticulous analysis, it delineates the intricate interplay of inequality at interpersonal and communal levels within the framework of autonomous adaptation, elucidating how it catalyzes multifaceted transformations across different strata of society. Utilizing a mixed-method approach, the study integrates the analysis of district-wise meteorological data spanning over three decades with a year-long ethnographic field study conducted in three distinct villages of Kozhikode—a fishing village on the coast, an agrarian village on the plain, and a village on the Western Ghats primarily depending on plantation crops. The book provides comprehensive visual aids, including maps illustrating the varying degrees of climate change exposure across different districts in India. Furthermore, it incorporates oral history accounts, grassroots narratives, and scientific analyses to illustrate how climate-induced ecological transformations manifest differently across diverse terrains, resulting in both convergent and divergent forms of societal change. This scholarly endeavor is poised to offer invaluable insights to a wide spectrum of stakeholders, including the general public, academic scholars, and policymakers. By illuminating the ground realities of climate change impacts and elucidating the shortcomings of existing adaptation policies, the book aims to enhance collective understanding and spur informed action in addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change. Through its rigorous analysis and accessible presentation, it serves as a critical resource for fostering evidence-based decision-making and advancing effective climate change adaptation strategies.

Spatial-Temporal Cooperative Guidance for Multiple Flight Vehicles

by Ming Xin Wei Dong Chunyan Wang Fang Deng Jianan Wang

The spatial-temporal cooperative guidance problem for multiple flight vehicles has garnered significant attention in recent years due to its potential benefits in both military and civil fields. This book provides a concise but holistic introduction to this practical problem and presents a summative collection of the latest solutions to the concerned challenges, thereby providing some theoretical support for enhancing the synergism and applicability of cooperative guidance for multiple flight vehicles. This book consists of nine chapters. In Chapter 1, recent works on cooperative guidance are systematically recalled. Chapter 2 introduces the common formulation and unique challenges of the cooperative guidance problem from a practical viewpoint. In Chapter 3, a varying-gain proportional navigation guidance law with accurate time-to-go prediction is developed to realize precise control of the impact time. In Chapter 4, in response to the inherent finite-time property of the cooperative guidance problem, a fixed-time convergent error dynamic is proposed to design a 3D distributed cooperative guidance law with enhanced convergence. In Chapter 5, a command-decoupled design strategy is proposed to address the challenging spatial-temporal cooperative guidance problem through the derivation and combination of the coplanar cooperative guidance and planar pursuit guidance commands. In Chapter 6, an integrated design strategy based on rotational operations on spatial vectors is proposed to simultaneously satisfy the impact angle and time constraints. In Chapter 7, a multiple-stage cooperative guidance strategy is developed to satisfy the spatial-temporal constraints without relying on time-to-go information. In Chapter 8, a unified command augmentation method is proposed to prevent the seeker's FOV from exceeding the boundary throughout the cooperative guidance. Finally, Chapter 9 concludes this book and offers an instructive opinion on the future directions of the cooperative guidance problem in both academic and engineering investigations. Therefore, this book can not only serve as a reference for researchers who are interested in this field with systematic and inspirational perspectives, but also be a useful handbook for engineers engaged in cooperative guidance and control of multiple flight vehicles.

Nonequilibrium and Irreversibility (Lecture Notes in Physics #1040)

by Giovanni Gallavotti

This 2nd edition of the book focuses on the properties of stationary states in chaotic systems of particles or fluids, setting aside the theory of how these states are achieved. The second edition has been thoroughly revised and includes numerous corrections. It incorporates recent findings, with particular emphasis on the equivalence between irreversible and reversible equations. The ongoing debate over reversibility and irreversible behavior is frequently discussed. The book seeks to unify the study of stationary nonequilibrium states with that of equilibrium states, using the paradigm offered by the simplest chaotic systems, specifically Anosov systems. The book begins by exploring the time-invariant distributions relevant to physics. A distinctive feature of this work is its historical approach. To clarify foundational issues, the author analyzes the works of pioneering figures like Boltzmann, Clausius, and Maxwell, including translated excerpts of key historical documents. Additionally, the author establishes a close connection between the treatment of irreversible phenomena in statistical mechanics and the theory of chaotic systems, particularly at and beyond the onset of turbulence, as developed by Sinai, Ruelle, and Bowen (SRB) and others. Arguments are presented to strongly support the perspective that stationary states, whether in equilibrium or not, can be described in a unified framework. The book offers extensive coverage of contemporary research, presented in sufficient detail to give advanced students a sense of the ongoing research directions in this dynamic field. Proofs of theorems are generally limited to heuristic outlines, favoring the presentation of concepts and providing references for further study, thereby avoiding an overload of technical detail in the main text.

Interpreting the Evolution of Atayal Tribal Textile Patterns: Tracing the Anthropological Footprints of a Taiwanese Ethnic Minority Group

by Jie Li Po Hsun Wang

This book elucidates findings from an anthropological study that analyzes the patterns of Taiwan's Atayal tribe&’s fabric in their ethnic dress codes. By analyzing the changes and development of the patterns over time, the authors draw fascinating conclusions regarding the geographical migration and intermarriage practices between indigenous minority groups in Taiwan&’s history. The book brings new insights within East Asian linguistic anthropology in theorizing about the origins of legends and broader patterns of ethnic migration, integrating the characteristics and relationships among Atayal fabrics, and interpreting these relationships in connection with the flow of sub-ethnic groups. In doing so, the book provides rich empirical evidence for anthropologists and migration scholars to better understand the movement of ethnic groups in Taiwan, while also establishing a model for how studying textile design can be employed to establish such linkages. The book shows that the composition and changes of ethnic minority patterns have their own internal logic and causes. By studying this, the authors demonstrate how such work might translate intangible and tangible culture into explicit and shareable knowledge and provide a compass for other anthropologists and researchers in the fields of visual and linguistic anthropology, migration studies, and ethnic and indigenous cultures, in Asia and beyond.
