Education for Citizenship in Times of Global Challenge: IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study 2022 International Report

by Wolfram Schulz John Ainley Julian Fraillon Bruno Losito Gabriella Agrusti Valeria Damiani Tim Friedman

This open access book investigates the ways in which young people around the world are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens. It presents the international results from the third cycle of the study IEA’s International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS 2022). Based on data from 24 countries or benchmarking participants from Europe, Latin America, and Asia, ICCS 2022 studies contexts for and learning outcomes of civic and citizenship education in a wide range of national contexts at the beginning of the third decade of the 21st Century. It responds to both enduring and emerging challenges of educating young people in a world where contexts of democracy and civic participation continue to change. The study addresses issues related to young people’s engagement through digital technologies, migration and diversity, perceptions of the political system, global citizenship, and education for sustainable development. Further, it contains data that reflects civic-related aspects of recent developments such as students’ perceptions of restrictions in response to national emergencies and their trust in scientists. Over the past 50 years, the IEA has conducted comparative research studies in a range of domains focusing on educational policies, practices, and outcomes in many countries around the world. Prior to ICCS 2022, the IEA had conducted four international comparative studies of civic and citizenship education, with a first survey implemented in 1971, a second in 1999, a third in 2009 and a fourth in 2016. ICCS 2022 data allows education systems to evaluate the strengths of educational policies, from a comparative perspective, and to measure progress in achieving critical social objectives of their educational policy agendas.

Entomopathogenic Fungi: Prospects and Challenges

by Sunil Kumar Deshmukh Kandikere Ramaiah Sridhar

This book brings together the molecular aspects of the pathogenesis of entomopathogenic fungi, various aspects of mycoinsecticide development, and regulatory aspects to highlight the immense contribution of the agricultural sector. The chapters address aspects of entomopathogenic fungi, including host-pathogen interactions (susceptibility and resistance), fungus-insect and fungus-fungus dual interactions, phylogeny and taxonomy, biochemistry, and molecular basis of enteropathogenesis, market potential of entomopathogens, regulatory aspects, bioprospecting of fungi, fungi as crop bodyguards and in disease suppression, and consortia for the control of insect pests and pathogens in single crop systems. Written by experts in academia and industry from Algeria, Brazil, Hungary, India, Italy, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, and the United States, the book overviews entomopathogenic fungi used as biological control agents against insect pests and other arthropods, their mode of action, pathogenesis, bioactive metabolites, mycotoxins involved, their mass production, limitations, and agricultural- and environment-related issues. It also includes developing various biopesticide products, with special references to formulations and prospects. In agriculture, crop protection and production depend on insect pests controlled by entomopathogenic fungi. Understanding the pathogenicity, mechanism of action, formulations, and applications of a wide array of entomopathogenic fungi as biopesticides is a valid eco-friendly approach. The book provides advances in pathogenicity, biochemistry, virulence, and interaction that facilitate the application of Beauveria, Metarhizium, and other entomopathogens as potential biopesticides against major insect pests. Developments in bioactive compounds, secondary metabolites, enzymes, and toxins of entomopathogenic fungi have facilitated precise applications and management to target insect pests. Further advances in molecular aspects, the formulation of nanobiopesticides, and biofabricated technology paved the way for insect pest control. This book will be a helpful resource for students, teachers, researchers, scientists, and professionals in the industry working on biological sciences, applied entomology, mycology, zoology, forestry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and nanotechnology.

George Santayana's and William James's Conflicting Views on Transcendence

by Antonio Rionda

This book studies the philosophical work of George Santayana and the nature of his work's relationship with that of American philosopher William James. James is consistently dismissive of “the ‘all is vanity’ state of mind,” which arguably represents the opposite of America’s activist, progressive ideals. The Spanish Santayana made the overcoming of vanity, or detachment central to his “vital philosophy,” which he had to gradually “disentangle” from the forces he found at work in America. This book, then, traces Santayana’s intricate response to James, from its earliest expression in Interpretations, to his later Realms. Rather than attempt to arrive at a final interpretation of either one’s philosophy, Antonio Rionda emphasizes what James refers to as the hotspot of each one’s thinking: James’s is best described as positivistic Existentialism, and Santayana’s as phenomenological intuitionism. Santayana’s post-Hegelian approach to doing philosophy allows for him to incorporate James’s major insights into his own thinking. The problem of how psychology relates to philosophy led Santayana to posit literary psychology as an alternative to its scientific variety, which once disentangled from James’s psychologism, represents the greatest virtue of James’s thinking.

The Just Transition: A Systems-Thinking Approach To Managing Climate Action

by John Morrison

Managing the climate transition will be one of the biggest challenges ever faced by business and government. While the technical and financial elements of climate transition are vast, the social challenges are even greater. If local populations and workers feel the transitions are not “just” they will resist, and that social opposition now represents one of the greatest barriers to reaching Net Zero by 2050. While the phrase ‘Just Transition’ was in the preamble to the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, it is only now that business, finance and governments are starting to discuss what this might mean in practice. Thousands of companies are now starting to develop transition plans alongside those of governments. This book shows how all managers can best integrate social elements into these plans, consult with the people most affected by the transition out of the high carbon economy, and ensure that what looks good on paper works in practice. It takes a systems-thinking approach, focusing on the interconnections and interdependence of environmental, social and governance issues. The challenge is immense, and the changes will need to be profound. Each chapter in the book will look at the main domains in which management and policy challenges will be faced. From massively increasing the extraction of rare earth metals, most of which sit below, or adjacent to, indigenous land, to building the infrastructure needed to generate and distribute green energy, possibly over “Not in My Back Yard’ objections, the task of business and government in ensuring that these changes are fair, and perceived as fair, is immense. This book provides the roadmap for how to get there. Managing the social impacts of the climate transition will be one of the biggest challenges ever faced by business and government.

Translation and Neoliberalism (New Frontiers in Translation Studies)

by Ali Jalalian Daghigh Mark Shuttleworth

This book explores the intersections of neoliberalism, translation, and interpreting, a scarcely explored topic in the field of translation studies across diverse regions, including Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia, covering four primary themes that offer unique perspectives on how neoliberal ideologies influence translation and interpreting. The first theme uses data triangulation to delve into the influence of market-driven ideologies on translation and interpreting curriculum globally as well as the neoliberal tendencies of the trainees in China and Korea. The second theme investigates the effects of top-down neoliberal policies on translation services and practices in Australia, Canada, and the UAE, examining how these policies influence service quality, working conditions, and the balance between market demands and academic requirements. The third theme assesses the influence of technology and neoliberalism on the translation and interpreting labor market, providing a critical analysis of the automation of translation workflows, the rise of non-standard employment arrangements, and the socio-economic challenges faced by translation professionals. The final theme analyzes the intersection of neoliberalism and translation at the discourse level, employing various approaches including critical discourse analysis and content analysis to explore how neoliberal values manifest in translated texts and practices in China, Iran, and USA. This book is an essential resource for academics, postgraduate students, researchers, policymakers, educators, and practitioners interested in the dynamic interplay between neoliberalism and translation, offering new insights and critical perspectives that contribute to a deeper understanding of the socio-economic forces shaping the field of translation and interpreting.
