Sportverbände im Neokorporatismus: Eine empirische Studie über staatlich geförderte Projekte zum ‘Sport mit Geflüchteten’ in Deutschland (Sport – Gesellschaft – Kultur)

by Anne Rübner

A Brief Presentation of Philosophy and Its History: Two Basic Questions

by Ulrich Steinvorth

This book presents philosophy as a historical series of answers to two questions: the meaning question (what does it all mean?) and the reality question (what is real rather than illusory?). Presenting philosophy as a historical series of answers to these two questions gives a new view of philosophy. It reveals a coherence between the disparate problems of philosophy which is not apparent when philosophy is approached in a systematic and timeless manner. On the basis of this historical approach, the book argues that philosophy was initially concerned primarily with the nature of reality but changed its focus when science was established as a separate discipline in the 17th century. Philosophy’s main concern is now the meaning question with a focus on questions of value as discussed in moral and political philosophy and in aesthetics. This book is essential reading for all scholars and researchers in philosophy and especially those interested in the history of philosophy.

Grappling with Monuments of Oppression: Moving from Analysis to Activism (Restorative Justice in Heritage Studies and Archaeology)

by Christopher C. Fennell

Grappling with Monuments of Oppression provides a timely analysis of the diverse approaches being used around the world to confront colonial and imperial monuments and to promote social equity.Presenting 12 interdisciplinary, international case studies, this volume explores the ways in which the materiality of social domination can be combated. With contributions from activists, scholars, artists, and policymakers, the book envisions the theme of restorative justice in heritage and archaeology as encompassing initiatives for the reconciliation of past societal transgressions using processes that are multivocal, dialogic, historically informed, community-based, negotiated, and transformative. Arguing that monuments to historical figures who engaged in oppressive regimes provide rich opportunities for dialogue and negotiation, chapters within the book demonstrate that, by confronting these monuments, citizens can envision new ways to address the context and significance of the figures they memorialize and the many people who were targets of their oppression. Contributors to the book also provide a toolkit of methods and strategies for addressing the continuing structures of social domination.Grappling with Monuments of Oppression will be essential reading for academics and students working in heritage studies, archaeology, anthropology, material culture studies, landscape analysis, and museum studies. The Sales Multiplier Formula: Simple Strategies to Multiply Your Sales by 4.68X

by Shawn Casemore

What do companies such as Northwestern Mutual Life, Hilton, and Nokia have in common? They approach selling differently than any of their competitors. Sales is not a transaction executed by the sales department; it’s a process that all employees support. The result? The sale value for each new customer is most often double, triple, or even quadruple what their closest competitors achieve. This book dives deeply into the exact formula for how you can achieve similar, if not even greater, results. Consider this your guide to shifting your organization from transactional selling to embracing a sales method that will explode your sales revenue, and engage your entire organization in doing so. The reason for embracing this method extends beyond achieving explosive sales growth. The author has coached thousands of sales professionals over the years, and one challenge they face stands out more than any other. It’s that selling is becoming increasingly difficult. Why do you think there are over one million sales-related vacancies in the United States at this very moment, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics? Prospects are more challenging to reach than ever; work-from-home schedules, anti-spam legislation, and policies that restrict visitors are making it increasingly difficult for your sales team to do what you want them to do – sell. Worse yet, when they do make a sale, it’s as if they are burdening the rest of the organization. Complaints about unachievable delivery dates, unacceptable terms, or insufficient profit, all result in a clear divide between sales, and everyone else. The result? A slow erosion of your sales, and an increased likelihood that your sales team will soon be searching for a different career. It’s been this way for a while now, and it will continue to be unless you adopt what the author shares in this book.

Psychoanalytic Objects Near and Far: Talking Cure

by Eran J. Rolnik

Touching upon the most sensitive nuances of the analytic encounter, Psychoanalytic Objects Near and Far combines a far-reaching theoretical manifesto with an intimate clinical journal to express curiosity, skepticism and love towards the psychoanalytic clinic, theory and history. Basic concepts and controversies that often become a conceptual ivory tower receive here a new and fresh vitality from the perspective of an experienced clinician, scholar and teacher, all while crossing the boundary of theoretical fantasy. While holding theory as central to the clinical act, Rolnik does not see it as a self-sufficient philosophy, detached from the free spirit of psychoanalysis as a practice and ethics. Rolnik has no need for iconoclasm. He is committed to the curative speech – his patients’ and his own – as well as receptiveness to the unconscious space in the most Freudian sense of the word. This volume will be of great interest to analysts in practice and in training, and to any reader interested in the analytic process.

Role Exit in Prison Officers: Returning to ‘Civvy Street’

by Darren Woodward Sarah Nixon

Exploring why prison officers leave His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) and the processes and trajectories involved in returning to ‘civilian life’, this book examines the reasons that prison officers want to leave HMPPS and how they transition back to ‘civvy street’.As well as presenting qualitative data from interviews with ex-prison officers, the authors also draw analytically on their ‘insider’ positionality to offer insights on the lived experience of prison officers both in the role and on their subsequent departure from the service. In doing so, they identify the rewards and challenges of working in a prison environment, while using Ebaugh’s (1988) four-stage model of role exit as a theoretical framework to help understand the process of leaving the prison service. Among the issues addressed are the impact of austerity, the Voluntary Early Departure Scheme, the decline in transmission of knowledge (‘jail craft’) to new recruits, high staff turnover, increased violence and the impact of COVID-19. These are counterbalanced by an exposition of what ex-prison officers recall positively about their time in service, such as loyalty, support, solidarity and pride in the uniform and helping prisoners with their custodial lives. The authors also put forward practical recommendations for ways in which HMPPS could encourage prison officers to stay in post for longer.Providing authentic insights into the role of ex-prison officers, this book is ideal reading for students and academics of criminology, penology, criminal justice, sociology and criminal psychology. It will also be of interest to criminal justice practitioners and organisations such as Unlocked Graduates, the Howard League for Penal Reform and the Prison Reform Trust.

Routledge Handbook on Palestine

by Michael Dumper Amneh Badran

This Handbook provides a broad overview of Palestinian history, society, politics, and culture across different contexts and periods, revealing the rich and varied dimensions of Palestine. To capture the diversity of Palestinian scholarship and to introduce readers to a mix of approaches and perspectives, both internationally established and emerging Palestinian scholars have contributed. The Handbook attempts to avoid narrowly framing Palestine around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, incorporating postcolonial approaches attentive to a broader range of (hitherto overlooked) actors. While a significant proportion of the Handbook examines the contemporary period, it is divided up into four sections that together provide a detailed overview of the main developments in the region: A historical section that contextualizes the complex historical formation of contemporary Palestine – perhaps best regarded as a country but not yet a state A section exploring the society, geography, economy, and identity of Palestine A section on the political significance of Palestine, covering the dynamics between Jewish nationalism (Zionism) and Palestinian nationalism A final section on culture, touching on architecture, literature, music, cuisine, education, and contemporary art Providing a deep analysis of the Palestinian perspective, the Handbook will prove valuable reading for anyone interested in the history, politics and society of Palestine and the Middle East.

Relationships Between Industry and Bank in Germany: A Historical Study of Personnel Connection Built Through Interlocking Directorate and Bank’s Advisory Council System

by Toshio Yamazaki

The objective of this book is to elucidate the characteristics and significance of the relationships between industry and banks in Germany. This is the first book to undertake a historical and comprehensive examination of the personnel connections established through the interlocking directorates and the bank’s advisory council system, using cases of Deutsche Bank, Dresdner Bank, and Commerzbank. This book addresses the mandates of the chairman and vice chairman and the distribution of industrial sectors to which companies belong. It also considers the personnel relations that are built and maintained. The book considers both direct and indirect interlocking directorates comprising the members of top management organs, namely the supervisory board and board of directors. It also examines the personnel networks therein, including those of second- and third-party enterprises, by applying social network analysis. In addition, the book examines the conditions for members of central and regional advisory councils and their top management positions. Furthermore, the functions supported by inter-firm personnel relationships via interlocking directorates and banks’ advisory council systems are examined in terms of information symmetry and conflict resolution, and coordination of the interests among enterprises. This book explores the interlocking directorate processes from bank to industry and vice versa, wherein the common recognition of a management issue is promoted through the information flow and media based on personnel connections. The book explains the system by which various conflicting interests among enterprises are resolved through discussion rather than market competition. It also elucidates the industry–bank relationships and their changes in the history of the development of German capitalism and enterprises. Thus, it provides a combined analysis of the structure and function of the personnel connections of large German banks.

Nutrients and Oxidative Stress: Biochemistry Aspects and Pharmacological Insights (SpringerBriefs in Food, Health, and Nutrition)

by Bee Ling Tan Mohd Esa Norhaizan

Oxidative stress plays a prominent role in the development of numerous human diseases associated with animal-based protein, high-carbohydrate diets and excessive fat consumption. Obesity represents the main risk factor for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Extensive research highlights the detrimental impacts of diets high in saturated fat and refined carbohydrates. Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity are attributed to the sedentary lifestyles, overconsumption of foods high in saturated fats and carbohydrates, and the saturation of nutrient storage. Indeed, the effects of oxidative stress are associated with the absolute quantity and the type of macronutrients; both of these aspects contribute to oxidative stress and may favor the development of obesity-associated diseases and obesity. Nonetheless, the underlying mechanisms of nutritionally mediated oxidative stress are complex and poorly understood. The literature reported on nutritionally mediated oxidative stress and the role of diets in oxidative stress-induced diseases has not well been compiled in a singular source. “Nutrients and Oxidative Stress: Biochemistry Aspects and Pharmacological Insights” explores how dietary choices dampen or exacerbate inflammation and oxidative stress. The implications of oxidative stress in glucose metabolism and adipocyte and obesity-associated non-communicable diseases are also discussed in this brief. Several issues linked to nutritionally mediated oxidative stress, including high carbohydrates, high animal-based proteins, and excessive consumption of fats and oxidative stress, and molecular mechanisms of oxidative stress-induced diseases are covered. The role of diets in oxidative stress-induced diseases is also discussed. By summarizing all the literature in one place, this work provides a cohesive representation of the information and practical reference on the underlying mechanisms of nutritionally mediated oxidative stress involved in the prevention of chronic diseases. The work provides a better understanding of the nutritionally mediated oxidative stress and the molecular mechanisms of oxidative stress in the development of chronic diseases and obesity.
