Design and Analysis of Secure Quantum Communication Schemes
by Ri-Gui Zhou Xiao-Xue Zhang Lin-Tao DuThis book provides a comprehensive guide to the design and analysis of quantum secure communication schemes. While quantum computers may provide a platform for arithmetic calculations which threaten classical cryptosystems, the development of quantum information has also brought a corresponding solution: quantum cryptography, which is the basis of quantum secure communication. Quantum secure communication (QSC) uses quantum states for key agreement and information transmission, and uses the basic principles of quantum mechanics to discover eavesdropping behavior, and to ensure the security of information. It can overcome the security risks of classical encryption technology and can securely distribute keys in real time via public channels. Beginning in 1984 with the first conception of quantum key distribution (QKD) based on single-photon polarization states, subsequent innovations include quantum identity authentication (QIA), quantum secret sharing (QSS), quantum direct communication (QDC), quantum key agreement (QKA), quantum private query (QPQ), and quantum network coding (QNC). Each of these schemes is explored in detail based on different environments and structures, along with specific security and feasibility analyses. This book is essential reading for academic researchers and graduate students in quantum science and technology, as well as professionals and engineers in quantum industries and cybersecurity.

Dialogue With the Unconscious: Exploring the Landscape of the Soul and Its Contradictions With Voice Dialogue (essentials)
by Radim Ress Alexander N. RiechersThe authors present a new version of Voice Dialogue that draws on the ideas of C.G. Jung and serves as a direct address to the unconscious. They demonstrate how the unconscious manifests as inner shapes in response to existential limit-experiences of an individual and their ancestors. These shapes are the carriers and movers of the personality and form the unconscious basis for our personal patterns of fate. Voice Dialogue leads from a consciousness-centered unity model to the multiplicity model of the soul, revealing the hidden power hierarchy in the unconscious. Dialogical togetherness helps to infuse the inner shapes with consciousness and to explore the contradictions, compulsions, and traits of our personality. Thus, the method offers a path to greater inner freedom.
Digital Transformation Through Business Model Innovation: A Qualitative Study Comparing German Private Family and Publicly Listed Non-Family Firms (Familienunternehmen und KMU)
by Percy MenthAssumed a variance between the established paths and opportunities occurring from the new, digital technologies, the aim of this book is to better understand why firms can struggle on digital transformation through business model innovation. In depth, Percy Menth studies, what specific characteristics of German private family firms and publicly listed non-family firms can influence potential struggling. Furthermore, the aim of this book is to identify ways, how both could benefit from one another. Therefore, the author analyses interviews with 30 owners and C-level managers from 30 German private family firms and 20 C-level managers of 15 German publicly listed non-family firms facing digital transformations. This study’s key finding is, that it is not the firms’ nature, that may primarily foster digital transformation and business model innovation, but rather people, who could make the difference between struggling and success.

The Ndebele, Frank Oates, and Knowledge Production in the 1870s: Encounters at the Edge of Empire (Cambridge Imperial and Post-Colonial Studies)
by Christopher Prior Joseph HigginsThis open access book addresses a question fundamental to the histories of empire and Africa: at the point of the colonial encounter, how was knowledge made? How did different communities, with little or no prior contact, construct meaning about one another? Amidst huge changes in the politics and economics of a continent, on the cusp of almost complete colonization at the hands of European powers at the end of the nineteenth century, how do the specifics of personality and contingency affect knowledge production? An obvious challenge in addressing this sort of question is the frequent lack of African-produced source material; here, we must work within the ‘archives of oppression’ and read both along and against the colonial grain in an attempt to restore African agency to this process of knowledge production. Drawing on the previously never-used diaries of explorer Frank Oates, who travelled throughout Matabeleland in the 1870s, the use of a single traveller’s experiences in detail affords us the means to consider the fine details of the interactions between Europeans and Africans. Therefore, this study seeks to enhance existing work on race and empire of the nineteenth century by asking: what place do the fragilities, uncertainties, and contingencies of encounters between individuals have in our understanding of how knowledge is made?
Dispute Resolution within Africa: A Journey Forward
by Rashri Baboolal FrankThe main topic is dispute resolution within specific Africa countries, and the journey of Africa becoming a global leader as the seat of dispute resolution, focusing on the mechanisms of mediation, arbitration, conciliation and negotiation. In international commercial transactions, it is inviolable that disputes arise, and the commercial contracts provide for a med-arb clause, and parties go to private forums to resolve the dispute. Negotiation becomes a key tactic embedded into the mediation techniques and style adopted, to ensure success of proceedings. If mediation fails then arbitration is the last stage to determine the finality of the dispute, when an award is given after hearing evidence, this final award is not appealable. The journey of Africa being a global leader encouraged partnerships with internationalinstitutions, practices and trends, but it is a journey that is necessary to overtake the European and American seats. This book provides scholars with the opportunity to navigate the journey of Africa becoming a main seat for dispute resolution and a leader in the international realm of alternative dispute resolution.
Women’s Contribution to Science and Technology through ICWES Conferences (Women in Engineering and Science)
by Monique Frize Claire Deschênes Ruby HeapThis book discusses the legacy of the conference series The International Conferences of Women Engineers and Scientists (ICWES), which spans the second half of the Twentieth Century and the beginning of the twenty-first. The book first discusses how, at a time when there were few women engineers and scientists, a group of women organized a conference, in June 1964 in New York, which attracted 486 women. They presented their scientific achievements and discussed how to attract more women in STEM. This effort was carried out by volunteers, continuing the ICWES conferences over a period of 59 years. The authors discuss the organizers, the hosting societies, the scientific content, the changes in issues over time, and how the continuity has endured. The authors also discuss the importance of global involvement, shown through past conferences in locations such as USA, UK, Italy, Poland, France, India, Ivory Coast, Hungary, Japan, Canada, and Korea. The authors also outline how the efforts were aided by the development of a not for profit Canadian corporation, the International Conference of Women in Sciences and engineering (INWES), which ensures the continuation of the conference series. Claire Deschênes and Monique Frize ensured that the conference database was digitalized and is now available at the Canadian Archive of Women in STEM, University of Ottawa Library, with the hope that researchers will continue to explore this rich database. As an important part of the Women in Science and Engineering book series, the work hopes to inspire women and men, girls and boys to study and work in STEM fields. This book is important historically because it documents a unique adventure created by women in STEM through vision and leadership. Their efforts established modes of networking and sharing their contributions in science, technology, and on gender issues.

Multi-Robot Systems: Coordinated Fencing Control and Applications (Cognitive Intelligence and Robotics)
by Hai-Tao Zhang Bin-Bin HuMulti-robot coordinated fencing, where a team of robots forms a protective formation around a target, has garnered significant attention and proven useful in practical applications such as area convoying. However, real-world scenarios often involve complex target characteristics, including varying dynamics and multiple targets, which can pose challenges in maintaining the formation. Additionally, due to sensor costs and environmental constraints, robots may only have access to directional constraint information, presenting further challenges. This book highlights cooperative fencing approaches for multi-robot systems and their practical applications to different unmanned surface (ground) vehicles, providing an overview of research trends and future directions in coordinated fencing. Firstly, a basic fencing controller using neighboring angle repulsion for a constant-velocity target is designed, laying the groundwork for complex fencing missions. Then, for more complex fencing with an evenly rotating formation, a distributed controller is developed using input-to-state stability, achieving coordinated fencing under intermittently varying topologies. For more complex varying-velocity targets, a distributed fencing controller based on output regulation theory is proposed. For general target fencing missions in both 2D and 3D, a formal long-term task execution framework is developed using control barrier functions. Moreover, unlike previous methods that rely on the relative position between the robot and the target, a distributed bearing-only fencing control algorithm based on the persistent-excitation condition is developed, requiring only comparatively inexpensive sensors. Finally, this exploration into the theory and application of coordinated fencing control provides guidelines for robust, efficient, and complex practical implementations of multi-robot missions.
The Black Marxist Feminism of bell hooks: Towards an Intersectional Theory of White-Supremacist Capitalist Patriarchy (Marx, Engels, and Marxisms)
by Hue WoodsonThis book explores bell hooks' trajectory of work and cohesiveness of thought about the meaning and meaningfulness of black womanhood in terms of a Black Marxist feminism, which uniquely confronts the dimensions of feminism and womanism; the relations between the secular and the religious; the problems of gender and sexism; and the structural and systemic issues of oppression, domination, white supremacy, and capitalism. In making sense of black womanhood in its philosophical, social, cultural, institutional, and historical complexities, hooks' Black Marxist feminism constructs an intersectional theory about what hooks describes as white supremacist capitalist patriarchy. In this sense, hooks' Black Marxist feminism conceptualizes the ways and means by which white supremacist capitalist patriarchy imposes intersectional predicaments upon black womanhood, drawing foundationally on Karl Marx and Fredrich Engels, working within the purview of a host of Marxisms in Antonio Gramsci, Louis Althusser, Karl Kautsky, Nikolai Bukharin, and Georgi Plekhanov, and speaking to the Marxist proclivities of Cedric Robinson, Cornel West, Charles W. Mills, James H. Cone, Stuart Hall, and Angela Y. Davis.

Geopolitical Change and the Antarctic Treaty System: Historical Lessons, Current Challenges (Springer Polar Sciences)
by Shirley V. Scott Tim Stephens Jeffrey McGeeThis book explores how geopolitical tensions have shaped the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) and offers insights into managing future challenges. The ATS, established with the 1959 Antarctic Treaty during the Cold War, has been a successful model of international governance, ensuring Antarctica's peaceful use and environmental protection. However, the ATS now faces new pressures, including an expanded membership of 57 states, increased economic activities such as tourism, fishing, and bio-prospecting, and the impacts of climate change. These factors are exacerbating geopolitical tensions that could challenge the stability of the ATS. The book examines key moments in the history of the ATS to understand how past tensions were managed and what lessons can be drawn for the future. The volume covers the creation of the CCAMLR marine conservation treaty in the late 1970s-1980s; the developing world's opposition to the ATS in United Nations debates during the 1980s-1990s; the shift from permitting Antarctic mining to establishing the Madrid Protocol on Environmental Protection in the early 1990s; the formation of the International Association of Antarctic Tourism Operators; the management of Illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported (IUU) fishing in the 2000s; and the proposals for marine protected areas under the CCAMLR Convention in recent years. Several contributions also draw on critical and regional perspectives to make sense of geopolitical pressures on Antarctic governance and how they might play out over the years and decades ahead. Through its attention both to critical turning points in the history of the ATS, and a broad range of conceptual approaches, the book provides an authoritative assessment of the ATS's capacity to address emerging geopolitical stresses and provides strategies for future governance. It is a timely resource for understanding the evolving dynamics in Antarctica and ensuring the region remains a zone of peace and scientific collaboration. This book is a companion volume to McGee, Edmiston and Haward, 2022, The Future of Antarctica: Scenarios form Classical Geopolitics, in the Springer Polar Sciences Series.

Sustainability in the Coffee Supply Chain: Tensions and Paradoxes (Palgrave Studies in Logistics and Supply Chain Management)
by Federica PascucciFrom the field to the cup, this book investigates sustainability issues along the coffee supply chain, identifying the challenges that firms face when they are called to reach sustainability goals. In particular, it explores the relationships involving the actors throughout the broad coffee supply chain, among which some tensions may emerge. Firms increasingly need to interact with various supply chain members to achieve their sustainability goals and with a variety of other stakeholders as well, such as NGOs or regulators. Therefore, in order to fully investigate sustainability, it is fundamental to adopt a broader view of the supply chain that goes beyond dyadic relationships (typically, between customer and supplier). This book adopts an “integrative logic” of sustainability and aims to explore the “hidden” or “dark side” of sustainable practices in the supply chain, for example, trade-offs, tensions and paradoxes. Overlooking these aspects can create serious impediments to a real-world progress toward sustainability. The empirical part of the book is focused on the coffee supply chain, which represents one of the most complex, globalized and inequitable supply chains, impacting communities and the environment worldwide. These characteristics make it particularly challenging for the industry to transition towards sustainability. Sustainability in the coffee sector is increasingly at risk in economic, social, and environmental terms, and there are several interdependencies among these three dimensions. The book will be of great interest to scholars and students of supply chain management, sustainability, and corporate and consumer responsibility. In addition, practitioners operating in the coffee industry could gain interesting findings about the most critical issues pertaining to sustainable practices and activities.
