His counterpart, a young girl living in occupied Japan and tending her dying brother, falls in love, and in the process discovers herself.

In the looming shadow of world enmities resumed, and of Asia's coming centrality in world affairs, a man and a woman seek to recover self-reliance, balance, and tenderness, struggling to reclaim their humanity. Reconsiderations (A Study of History, Volume #12)

by Arnold J. Toynbee

Arnold Toynbee writes: By the time when volumes VII-X of this book had been published, the present volume XII, 'Reconsiderations,' was already due. In the course of the twenty-eight years that it had taken to produce the first ten volumes, archaeological discoveries-particularly in Middle America and in the Middle East of the Old World-had made some important additions to, and changes in, our picture of the history of the earlier civilizations in both hemispheres. At the same time the publication of the first three batches of volumes of this book had drawn a considerable amount of comment and criticism. Both these things called for a reconsideration of the book as a whole. In the present volume, the writer has reconsidered the philosophical questions raised by his method of work, and has also met a demand for definitions of the terms that he uses, besides bringing his accounts of some of the earlier civilizations up to date. In discussing the points raised by his critics, he has tried to avoid reacting to the critics as if they were opponents to be resisted. A writer and his critics are really partners in a common endeavour to increase our knowledge and understanding, and a writer ought to welcome the help that his critics are able to give him. The present writer has tried to keep an open mind in reconsidering his ideas in the light of his critics' comments. He has not, of course, been convinced by all the criticisms that he has received, but, wherever he has come to the conclusion that his views need revising, he has said so frankly. Charmed: Garden of Evil

by Emma Harrison

rapped in paradise "I'm sure you already know this, but I have to tell you, your home is beautiful," Paige said, walking along the periphery of the library, taking in the leather-bound titles as Micah followed closely behind. "And I'm sure you already know this, but so are you," Micah said. "It was so important to me that you love this place as much as I do," he continued quietly. "But I knew. I knew the moment you saw it that you had fallen in love." A warm rush raced over Paige's skin as he moved his hands to her waist. She looked up at him, her eyelids heavy. "How could I not?" she said. "It's ... fascinating." As they gazed into each other's eyes, Paige felt the same dizzying sensation she'd experienced at the restaurant the night before, but it was okay. She was beginning to enjoy it-this feeling of being lost in his eyes. "You haven't even seen the best part yet," Micah said, his voice throaty. "The best part?" she repeated, temporarily incapable of forming her own thoughts. "The garden," Micah said, his eyes flashing with excitement. "You have to see the garden."

Charmed: Mystic Knoll

by Diana G. Gallagher

00* SNAkES. "Ahh! Ahh!" Doreen shifted from one foot to another to avoid a mass of wiggling green, yellow, and black snakes. She was terrified and fell into Larry's arms. "Okay, dear. Time to go." Larry slung Doreen's arm over his shoulder and helped her stumble forward. He started into the next tunnel and stopped dead. "I hope there's another way back." "Me too." Paige shone her flashlight inside the narrow stone corridor. The passage floor was covered with snakes. Several began shedding their skins. "Cross-country," Tammy said, taking charge. Ignoring the snakes sliding out of the rock pile, she climbed it. "This way." Paige let Joyce and Daniel go first, then steadied Larry as he carried Doreen up the rock pile. When Paige reached the top, she realized that cutting through the woods was only a slightly better alternative than taking the tunnels. The ground was alive with thousands of writhing snakes.

A Father, Again

by Mary J. Forbes

'"Why are you weeding in the dark, Rianne?" "It soothes me when I feel hemmed in." "Something happen at work today? The kids?" She looked toward the hedge. Her shoulders drooped. She shook her head. He didn't know why it hurt, but it did. He wanted her trust. Trust. Belief. Support. Yeah, he wanted the combo. He wanted to offer comfort. Which would mean touching more than her hands. Not wise, Jon. Except, wisdom and want were at a draw and he was all out of referees. "Come here." He tugged her forward until her shoulder leaned into his chest. For her comfort, he told himself, and wrapped his arms around her. "Shh. We're okay," he murmured into the crown of her hair. Holding her loosely, waiting until the tension left by degrees. She felt great in his arms. Small, warm, soft. A surge to claim her rushed up, stunning him....

Charmed: Beware What You Wish

by Diana G. Gallagher

Dangerous Desires "Fires and floods, muggings and lost kids." Phoebe shuddered. She had awakened in a great mood, but the news reports in the paper and on TV had demolished it. Natural disaster and human malevolence waged a relentless war against the helpless. At least the Charmed Ones could fight the demonic evil they encountered. "Are you okay?" Concerned, Piper rested a hand on Phoebe's knee. "Yeah, it's just that-I wish my visions weren't so selective because then we could keep more of this awful stuff from happening." Phoebe's stomach suddenly heaved with nausea, and a rush of dizziness made her head spin. Her coffee mug slipped from her hand as she gasped and doubled over. "Phoebe!" Piper threw her arms around her stricken sister and let the mug land on the carpet. "What is it?" Prue jumped from her chair and knelt down by the sofa. "A vision?"

Charmed: Date with Death

by Elizabeth Lenhard

I'm glad i ran into you, Paige," josh said. "Why?" Paige asked apprehensively. She leaned back against the clammy brick wall of P3's alley. "Because," Josh continued, leaning in. His voice got deeper, almost robotic. And his face began to change too, darkening into a sinister glower. Paige could feel his breath-hot and fetid-gust onto her face. "You've got my heart." Paige glanced down and saw Josh's hand reaching toward her chest. His arm was shaking, as if infused with some sort of electricity. And as his fingertips brushed the bare skin above the low-cut bodice of her dress, his nails instantly grew into glinting, razorlike talons.

Cattleman's Heart

by Lois Faye Dyer

"Save me a waltz." Luke's voice was suddenly deeper, and tension vibrated between them. His words reminded Rebecca of the last time they'd waltzed together and how it feltj to be held in his arms. ; The need to leave her chair, to take the short two steps separating them, run her hands over the bare muscles of his chest and arms aind lift her mouth to his was nearly overwhelming. The force of emotions he raised in her was disconcerting. She decided to obey the alarm bells that were screaming caution in her brain. "I will-if you're there." Which, was as noncommittal as she could be without refusing him outright. She stood. "And since it sounds as if it's going to be a long day tomorrow, I think I'll try to get some sleep." She turned toward the screen door, hesitating to say good-night, before she pulled open the door. "Good night." His voice was hushed, quieter than usual, but it still sent shivers up her spine.

"Her face," Phoebe whispered urgently. "Look at her face. I don't think that happened last time. Malvolio's possession of her must be almost total." Piper nodded as Paige helped her get to her feet. "No two ways about it. He's definitely getting stronger." C. K. looked around the room, her eyes glittering wildly. "I require a vehicle," she said. "You will provide one." "Okay," Phoebe said, as she carefully got up. "No problem. Mind if we come along for the ride?" C. K. smiled. "Foolish witches," she said. "You think that you can stop me? I am stronger than you can possibly imagine. No power on this earth can prevent what I am about to unleash." "I'll take that as a yes," Phoebe said. She headed for the front hall. Yanking her keys from her purse, she lobbed them across the room toward C. K. "You drive."
