What do I need to apply?
You will need to complete the following items:
How long is the program?
The implementation phase of the program will be executed during the 2025-2026 school year. After that, cohort members will still have access to the cohort community and Bookshare staff support as needed.
How often will we meet?
There will be two monthly meetings:
- One all cohort meeting (90 minutes)
- One team meeting (45-60 minutes) with Bookshare staff
Who should apply?
Anyone who supports students with visual, physical or learning accessibility needs is welcome to apply. Teams could include district administrators, special educators, assistive technology specialists, teachers of the visually impaired, general educators, literacy specialists, librarians, therapists, educational assistants etc.
We encourage all types of Districts (Public, Private, Charter) to apply. Priority will be given to school districts in under resourced areas, including rural districts.
When and where is the kick-off meeting?
The kick-off meeting is on July 15th and 16th and will be at a location central for selected program members.
What expenses will be covered for the kick-off meeting?
Benetech will cover customary travel expenses for one attendee per BEC team to attend the kickoff meeting. This includes:
- Airfare and lodging arrangements
- Meals during the kick-off meeting
For ground transportation and meals/incidentals while traveling, reimbursement will be provided after the event at the Government Per Diem rate, based on location.
How many people can be on each team?
A multi-person team is required for program participation. Applicants may determine how many interdepartmental members are needed for successful implementation based on district size, resources, and time availability of members. The BEC Team does not need to be finalized when the application is submitted.
What prework will be required?
To ensure all have a strong foundational knowledge of Bookshare, accessible education materials, and accessibility best practices, prior to the kick-off meeting, cohort members will be required to complete the following:
- The IRIS Center training module, Bookshare: Providing Accessible Materials for Students with Print Disabilities.
- A short program pre-survey.
- Confirm that Bookshare is an approved district resource or if not, connect Bookshare staff with appropriate district team to facilitate process.
- Provide curriculum information for Reading List development by Bookshare staff.
What is meant by sharing FERPA-compliant student outcome data?
To evaluate the program’s effectiveness, districts will be asked to submit anonymized or aggregated data on educational outcomes for students impacted by the BEC program. This will not include any personally identifying information. The BEC Teams will work with Bookshare staff and external evaluators to determine what data can be shared.
What is the Application review process?
Applications will be reviewed by a multi-disciplinary team of reviewers. Some applicants will be selected for virtual interviews, and a select group of districts will be chosen to participate in the program.
Please contact the BEC team with any further questions.
